    Hey guys,
Long time reader, first time posting. I am running into some issues with the paint on my 2017 Tacoma. From what I have found on here, this seems to be an unfortunate problem with the white paint that many have encountered. I brought it to a local dealership and they agreed to paint the one door that was peeling way back when I bought the truck. Several months later, however the paint started to peel on the other door and now has evolved to multiple areas (hood, windshield doors). I have tried over and over to call Toyota but they say there is nothing that can be done. The dealership also was no help even after painting one door for free. I love the truck and hate this paint is causing issues because I only have 50,000 miles on it but what else can be done? Has anyone gotten a quote to sand and repaint a 2017 Tacoma ? Thank you!Paint 1.jpg Paint 2.jpg Paint 3.jpg Paint 6.jpg

Sorry your dealing with this. Hope they step up for you and all else is going through this with Super White, and others with clear cost problems.

Toyota has to know the cause of this problem. They are a multi-millions (billions?) dollar company and I'm sure they have a very well-funded and talented research and development team including paint scientists that could identify exactly what the issue is/was here. They have too many vehicles across their product line not to know what is causing it... not to mention they have a program to remedy other models in their line up that are losing their paint like this. It's not like you can lie or invent/make this problem up on the truck by accidentally spraying it with ammonia window cleaner or something.

My strategy would be to never give up with Corporate if I ever have this problem. Be nice, be courteous, persistent, maybe even cordial, and borderline pest: but never give up or go away. If other owners aren't having this problem with the color of the paint on their truck, they should not expect Polar White owners to just except it and go away. I would work the chain of command until I hit the threshold for getting a remedy. Maybe a "check-in status call"every 30 days or so. I didn't have a clue about this issue when I bought my truck. I like the color. I hope it never comes to that for me: They don't know how I get.
    Good luck.

Read the thread I linked above.

There is a known reason and a remedy. For some reason it just hasn't been applied to Tacoma yet.

Every other Toyota model, yes. Why not Tacoma's is the mystery.

I find when you call 'corporate' you're just getting a customer service rep working from home using a scripted answer of 'no'.

Thank you. I reviewed I saw the theory that it may be isolated to trucks produced in Baja, but couldn't find any info on what is the actual cause of the failures. My truck was built in Texas and noted the entry someone added here that so far no one reported the problem here for a Texas truck: It certainly doesn't make me feel any better about it though, especially that it is so common and affecting lots of other loyal owners.

The problem is the white not bonding to the primer. It's why repair requires stripping to bare metal, the primer is the root cause.

Since every model of white Toyota is potentially impacted, it's not a single plant issue. My RAV was assembled in Canada.

Again, not including Tacoma's in the remedy is the real mystery

Got it: Missed that post entry: thanks! Primer issue is the only thing that makes sense. (to me anyway) It could be faulty sheet metal prep/contamination, but then the primer wouldn't stick to the sheet metal either. Maybe it's the numbers at play: I don't have the figures but maybe it's more potential Tacoma Polar White failures as they have to be one of the biggest, if not THE biggest production totals in their vehicle line-up.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. It makes sense that the primer is the issue because I did some fine sanding in some of the less obvious areas and applied the factory touch up paint. It lasted a few months but now the touch up paint is once again peeling off. I am going to keep bothering corporate but really have not gotten very far. I guess the solutions are live with it, strip and paint the entire truck, or touch it up and trade it in (which is only to screw someone else over ).

I feel like there should be a recall on super white paint if enough people complain about it

Recalls are safety issues, not cosmetic.

There is already a remedy in place for both Super White and Blizzard Pearl that meet certain conditions. It includes all Toyota models except Tacomas. See post 317 in the link provided in post 2 above as an example.

Why are Tacomas excluded? No one seems to know. Getting Tacoma's included would be the goal if consumers wish to nag Corporate.

I want to say that I read somewhere on here that the majority of the white paint fails were from the Mexico factory. Their primer was different than the US or Canada blend, as well as slightly brown/red in color vs typical gray color.

Obviously if your paint is peeling and wasn't manufactured in Mexico, then there is clearly not on the Mexico plant for the failure.

Do you know where your Tacoma was made? If you look at your VIN's first number, 5=Texas 3=Mexico.
