tow hook recommendations

2011 tacoma.

i want aftermarket tow hooks. dealer says 'T' slots in the frame work as such. i'm not satisfied with that response, but understand dealers have to do what the supreme high command dictates.

Q: anybody suggest and aftermaket set (front & back) of tow hooks & related hardware?

For the rear, a receiver mounted shackle would be fine.

i just use the pin that holds my receiver in the hitch.. drop your tow strap on the pin, put your clip on it.. and pull...


worst comes to worst if you bend something its gonna to be the retaining pin, instead of a tow hook.

 

i realize what i said may not be very clear.. so what im saying is put the towstrap loop on the pin, and put the pin into your hitch as you would normally do..

 

Why were you asking the dealer about aftermarket ones? If you are going to ask the dealer, ask them order the TRD hook (P/N: 51961-35080) and the two bolts (P/N: 90119-A0193) for the front.

For the rear, I like the Tow Ready 63046 (aka Draw Tight 63046 aka Hidden Hitch 63046 aka Reese 63046) tow ring. It is less expensive and heavier duty than the other hitch mounted ones I've seen on the market. Be warned it is HEAVY.

wrong choice of words. i was more concerned when the parts guy told me he used to work for a towing company and the process was to use a long hook into the slot on the chassis (rear) or the back axle, and on the tie down hook or control arm on the front, and yank!

Looks like a receiver mounted hook. I'd go shackle instead.

 

They go in your hitch and you put your hitch pin through it...as does their shackle one I posted the part number above.

it works good, pulled a Ford out of the snow the first weekend i had it on and also worked good pulling an ice shanty around on the lake, using a ball hitch it might come off with slack line

I would stay away from a hook, find something that you can securely attach a d-shackle to.

Same goes for a recovery strap. No hooks, use looped ends.

i am trying to be weight conscious. i am not considering receiver hooks or shackles because as soon as the stock bumper is changed to an Armor Tech unit, it's coming off.

 

Use the hitch pin then. Slide the loop of the strap inside the receiver hitch. Stick the pin through. Call it a day.

 

I added the TRD hook and also have the factory loop on other side up front and have receiver shackle for the back.

 

when i put in the shackle, do i have to shim so there's no side to side play?

There are rubber isolators you can buy that will prevent rattle, otherwise no.

Remember when tightening your shackle for a recovery, all the way finger tight, turn back 1/4 - 1/2 turn.

do a lot of people do it this way? what are the chances of bending or breaking the hitch pin? also, by pulling directly from the hitch pin is there a chance for the holes in the actual hitch to get "oval" or "egg" shaped?
