    Thought y’all would appreciate this….

Went out mushroom hunting last year, drove out to the woods pretty far away from home. Was about 10 miles out from the nearest paved road and found a sweet spot to pick some chanterelles. Parked the truck, grabbed my bags and some other things out of the bed and started hiking out into the woods.

Like I said, this is a pretty remote part of the woods, so I was the only person out there, or so I thought. Saw tons of deer (deer love mushrooms), lots of wildlife, tons of mushrooms all around me. Appreciating the solitude, I took the time to enjoy the scenery.

About an hour or two so goes by and I return to my truck with my haul. Bagged a shit ton of chanterelles for the air dryer so I begin packing up my stuff to head back home. I like to do a “last check” for dropped items before I head off so I walk around to the front of my truck looking for stuff only to find this…

Apparently my truck took a bullet to the hood while I was out hiking around. I was mushroom hunting during elk season here in Oregon and definitely heard a few gun shots while I was out looking around for mushrooms. Apparently one of those shots tagged my truck….

The photos above are from the day after for my insurance adjuster. As you can see, I placed a piece of duct tape over the hole to attempt to keep water and other shit out of the hood & motor. I figured I was getting new hood either way but it wouldn’t hurt to cover it up, especially if I was pulled over by a police officer or something haha.

Interestingly, the bullet penetrated the first layer of the hood (no shit) and then hit the inner reinforcing sheet metal and ricocheted back into the backside of the first layer to stop there. I wasn’t able to recover the round from the hood, so I’m wondering if it’s hanging out in my skid plate or something. No motor damage from the shot, just a hole in my hood. Looks like the hood did a pretty good job of stopping the round from going further.

Anyways, figured I’d share this with y’all. I thought it’d give a little more credence to the fact Tacoma’s are bulletproof trucks, literally so in some cases. Just happy I wasn’t driving the truck when it happened as I’d likely be cleaning up a stained drivers seat in addition to getting the hood replaced.

So the truck is perfectly driveable? I’d say you “dodged a bullet” :cookiemonster:

Either it was intentional, or the person does not know how to use a firearm responsibly.

Know whats behind your target before you pull the trigger. I've shot a lot of guns and done a lot of hunting, but never seen a bullet hit something it wasn't supposed to like that. Luckily it was only a flesh wound for the Taco in this case and not a fatal shot to the block.

    Any chance it was intentional?

I don’t think it was intentional but it’s hard to say for sure. My guess is a hunter shanked his shot at an elk and the round found its way home to the hood of my truck.

Hole was sized about about .3-ish inches, so my guess is it was a .30 caliber rifle round from a long ways off

dont kid yourself, chances are far higher it was intentional than not

In portland you'd have 17 rds fired but only 1 hitting anything

You might consider not gathering a shxxt load of mushrooms during hunting season and shxxt like that. I mean, like shxxt, you could get a hole in you, shxxt man, and that would hurt a lot more than a hole in your Taco, like shxxt!

Tacomas are meteor proof, like, shxxt, they can take a hit:

    Shxxt! That happened too!

Mushroom hunting can be very serious business, folks have been killed over it. Not joking at all, same with ginger root and some other plants (besides the obvious illegal dope grows).

You're probably right, a .30 cal round someone is using for elk at close range will go clean through the hood no problem. I would bet the shot was taken at more than 500yds from the truck.

Someone missed and your poor truck was in the wrong spot.

That looks like a pretty low angle of entry for the round to have come from some distance away. And the coincidence of being centered on the hood like that? Way too remote in my mind.

My guess would be a handgun round shot off as a warning to stay away from someone's turf.
