Yeah I bought the upper idler bolts as a precaution, not sure how easily the heads would get rounded from rust. Turned out to be not needed.
Wut? I didn't spend 10,000 yen on a JDM automatic knob to be labeled "manual"

@Windigo is running 37s on a manual 2nd gen with stock 3.73 gears I think.

i had to dig down to 2nd gear on the interstate to keep speed up some of the mountain passes in CO and UT even with my tiny 33s and 4.30s.

i can't imagine how miserable it would be with 37s on stock gearing. hopefully he's not taking that rock-verlander out west.

He runs pretty light, but yeah the rock-overlander build is going to be interesting.

What do ya’ll carry with you for spare parts?
Going to start ordering some stuff real soon.

I’ve got the obvious like wheel bearings, u-joints, tie rods (inner and outer) and a cv shaft ,upper &lower ball joints.
What else should i add to the list?

    Even tools to add?
I usually carry a socket set(with a socket for cv shaft), and some random pliers, wires, screwdrivers, etc..

Will probably carry 1 of each.

Just look at failures encountered in the club over the years.
    • Depending on duration of trip, wheel bearing may not be necessary - if it starts groaning during the trip, you can still drive home.
    • Haven't seen a ball joint separate on the trail with 2nd/3rd gens (different risk level for 3rd gen 4Runner folks). Likewise with U-joints. IMO if you check these things at home and fix if you see grease leak or slop, they won't fail on the trail. If you carry spares, you'll want to carry a puller tool and C-clamp-style ball joint press to be able to change it.
    • Spare wheel cylinder and a 10mm line wrench to change it.
    • Fuel and coolant hoses of various diameters that you can cut to length, and hose clamps of various sizes.
    • Spare brake hoses (one for front, one for rear).
    • Spare ABS wheel speed cable for one corner, can be used to repair broken wires at other corners. (Linked P/N is for 2nd gen.)
    • Supplies for electrical repairs - crimp butt connectors and ring connectors, small spools of 14ga and 18ga wire, heat shrink, spare fuses, wire stripper/crimper.

Plus common road trip repair items:
    • Fan belt and tools to change it.
    • Set of wiper blades.
    • Headlight bulb if halogen.

on the bright side you shouldn't have to contend with too many 10,000ft+ mtn passes on the way to Boston.

No Rocky Mountain passes on the way to Boston. Did it once in a 1985 Nissan Sentra with 59 hp...

i use a blunt chisel to hammer out the cv from the diff and a brass hammer to hit the socket to pound in the cv. May want those.

bailing wire, zipties, heavy duty tape and then fluids as well (especially brake fluid….)
