Starter went out?

So the last couple days my Tacoma has been starting weaker and weaker than this morning it didn’t start. I don’t think it’s the battery because I hooked up jumper cables to the truck to my Rav and same issue when I turn the key only one click. From the starter. I tried tapping the starter but no luck as well. Since I hooked up the battery cables the starter is the next obvious replacement. I’d ideally like to go with OEM but would like to have suggestions on what I should get because the only ones I can find online are remanufactured denso and the one at the dealership is over $250. Denso 2800150 1.4kW w/o cold spec

one is Denso 2800166 1.8kW w/ cold spec

I think you can buy rebuild kits somewhere. Starters kinda suck to change if your truck is the 3.4

I decided to try this new, not remanufactured, Nippondenso 1.8kW starter for approx. $85 from Rockauto: More Information for PURE ENERGY 17672N (rockauto.com). It has been working great on my '97 V6 Taco 4x4 hunting/mud machine. There was no core charge/return shipping to deal with and it has 2 Year Roadside Assistance VS 1 year for the reman. But I very much doubt there is any real Roadside Assistance available in regard to this new starter in the middle of the swap I hunt in. A "Good Luck" farewell wish over the cellphone is about all I can expect out of that. Will rebuild the original Denso starter myself to keep as a spare whenever I find time. About 3 months ago, I pulled off my starter and had it rebuilt by a local shop that specializes in rebuilding starters/alternators. They've been around at least 40 years. Dropped it off in the morning and got it back the following day. It has worked perfect since I got it back. Might be worth considering.

 

Just rebuild it, super easy and stupid cheap.

You can send me $100 as a tip for said advice and still come out ahead.

 

They're not hard, just hard to access a bolt if it's a V6 4x4 Auto.

If it's either a manual or a 4x2, it'll be stupid easy. If it's both a manual and 4x2 it'll be easier any other combination.

 

Yep, this is what I do to all my stuff, starters, alternators, etc. keep the OE cores.

 

Have you done it in a Tacoma? We already know 4R wheel wells are a touch different

 

Lemme come back and say it took longer to figure out angle it needed to be to find out of the wheel well than it did to unbolt

 

I had pulled the Tacoma one cause I thought I was going to be upgrading my cables; that was way too easy cause it was a Prerunner (but a V6). I needed to get all the lengths for another member.

4Runner I had pulled and rebuilt following a Tacoma post; no pictures just a list of steps and it worked the same way.

Aside from the radiator, core support, lbj's, and tie rod ends and sway bar, everything else up front is damn near identical.

 

Maybe not so obvious, this has blindsided me a few times over the years. When you jump a vehicle you attach the jumper cables to the battery leads which won't do any good if the posts and insides of the leads are collecting corrosion. Did you pull the battery leads and clean the posts?

Agree with others, changing out the starter in a Toyota PU is way more work than it should be, it would be awesome if you didn't have to do it LOL

Just had my starter and alternator rebuilt on BMW. Everything is working great.

 

find a local shop that rebuilds alternators and starters. Ive always done that with my starters from all my cars and never had any issues. Cheaper and most of the time they will given you warrantee
