3rd Generation Coolant bypass leak

Anyone experience a Rear coolant bypass joint leak? It happened to my Tacoma and it is so much of a pain to get too i let the dealer do it $1000,00. Dealer says its a common. Has anyone fixed it themselfs?

Thanks, I think ill complain to the NHTSA maybe theyll start a recall it looks like alot of Tacos and Tundras have the problem I see 2016 on up! I urge everyone to contact the NHTSA even if you didnt experience the Leak sooner or later it will probubly happen then its a heavy labor cost,

 

From what I’ve seen/read on here, most are just a very slow seep. If it happens to mine at some point outside of the warranty, it wouldn’t be worth the effort or cost to repair to me unless it got to the point of losing significant coolant.

Idk, if these seepage leaks from a coolant pipe would even be considered for a nhtsa complaint. My brother got a recall from toyota to inspect his rave4 hybrid for the casting of the engine block itself for possible porosity issues which could result in loss of coolant, and loss of engine power.

 

Recalls are safety related. Highly doubt this could be considered as such.

 

Thought NHTSA only cared about safety issues ?

NHTSA Cares about safety and issues on recurring problems blowing coolant from a piece of plastic joint and having a overheated engine and possible engine seize up is a safty issue, Awhile back they did a recall on the Rear differantial possible leak, and Frame corrossion so is not a coolant leak just as?

 

I don't think so. After many years here, there have been a few but not many complaints for this issue. Remember there are millions of Tacomas. I think it's just not a big thing. To you it is, just not a lot of others.

 

Unfortunately this is not a safety related issue and they will not do anything.

It is just a piss poor design on behalf of Toyota.

 

I personally am glad i have a new one on, but i feel sorry for anyone who will go through this they may not be as lucky as i was.

 

As others have stated, there are a few threads on that subject here. At this point mainly 2016 & 17’s affected. Although I think there was an 18 and a 2020. Most here were hoping that there was an revised part sometime in 2018. No one can confirm tho. Just luck of the draw.

 

2019, 45k miles, bought it as CPO with 21k miles. I was gonna change the oil tonight, I took a peek from underneath, here was what I saw:
My question is would it be covered under the 5yr/60k or 7yr/100k mile powertrain warranty?

 

That looks like what i had, I would assume 5yr. Only way to find out would be the dealership, If you can take it in ASAP before it really gets bad, Plastic gets brittle too, They will have to drop the Trans to repair. Then make a complaint to the NHTSA

 

The complaints aren't going to do anything. It's not a safety concern. Just a shit design. Same as the timing covers leaks. General repairs like this won't become a recall ever.

GM's had have thousands and thousands of lifter failures. Still not a recall. People were literally driving off the lot and a lifter would let go in their $70k truck.

 

Coolant on a crosswalk is like stepping on a Banana peel. Very unsafe!

Imo I don't see how any revised part that is still plastic and is bolted between two solid pieces of metal which are expanding and contracting continuously, changing the distance ever so slightly, is not going to eventually crack. There needs to something in the design that will allow slight expansions and contractions so it will not crack. A darn rubber hose would have lasted longer than just 50k, maybe even 150K !

It is a piss poor design, period. Wake up Toyota, I would expect this from Chevy or Ford.
