Prospective Softopper buyer here, my main concern is the visibility it would cut out. How bad is it compared to a regular cap/no cap at all? Is there a particular reason Softoppers don't come with at least an option for vinyl windows on the side? Can't find anything even aftermarket to fit that bill.

Additionally, how are folks experiences camping out of the bed with a Softopper? I've heard good things about weatherproof-ness, but while I know they're not hard caps, I'm wondering how people feel security-wise sleeping in them, if you had to for example, camp at a truck stop or similar less-than-ideal situation overnight here and there. Not really looking to blow $2500+ on a regular cap, hoping the soft option is viable for what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Never used a regular cap so not sure about visibility compared. I use the mirrors. Windows aren't an option because of the design. Just not feasible. I've slept in mine many times and it obviously wouldn't feel as secure as a hard shell. I wouldn't be able to sleep soundly in a truck stop parking lot because of this. Rain gets in the corners and trips down. You might have a similar issue with a hard shell but you can probably seal it up.

Honestly for your usage it sounds like a hardshell is better for you.

Fair enough, kinda had a feeling that'd be the case. The price of a new cap is just gonna sting a lot if that's the route I go, can't find any that will fit my truck in my area.

Be greatful you don't have a short bed. I am constantly finding amazing deals on Craigs List, but always for long bed.

Just picked up a Bestop Soft top! Excited for camping season, loving this thing already especially "safari mode".

Anybody using a tailgate pad for bikes with their Softtopper on? Any tips on loading and unloading without having to fold the topper open? Tilting the bike and squeezing it through the opening is kind of a pain.

It’s even worse with the bestop because of a bar that has to be removed. I been looking at thishttps://www.1up-usa.com/

I use a moving blanket draped over the tailgate. Just gold the softopper forward a little, load the bike with front wheel hanging over the tailgate, then put softopper back in place.

Open the tailgate and then close it while holding the bike in position. Super easy with one bike. Multiple bikes gets interesting without an extra set of hands.

Yeah that’s what I thought. I’m only loading 2 bikes. I’ll give it a shot.

I’ll have to keep this in mind. Thanks!

A change in my job is allowing me to start to plan my trucks conversion to full time adventure vehicle (they give me a car). Now with it no longer being my daily driver, I'm not worried about weight so I'm thinking of selling my current softopper and HMO bed bars to get a GFC, Four Wheel camper or Super Pacific.... Tough choice though as I really do love my current set up but with a 5' bed it's impractical for sleeping.
