Do not use cruise control in a rainstorm. It’s not intended for that use.

Be safe out there- we don’t want this to turn into a “is my truck totaled?” thread.

You couldn't be more wrong but I've come to expect baseless and often derogatory assumptions being more common on this forum than any other I inhabit. I've likely been driving decades longer than many here have been alive and that includes a half million miles behind the wheel of an eighteen wheeler and many thousands of miles in high performance vehicles. I haven't had an accident since I was a teen and that's over a half century ago so you any implication that I'm not a safe driver is meaningless.

The DRCC (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control) on page 267 of owner's manual states conditions unsuitable for use:

*When weather conditions are bad enough that they may prevent the sensors from detecting correctly (fog, snow, sandstorm, heavy rain, etc).

**When there is rain, snow, etc on the front surface of the radar system or front camera.

There's other cautions listed that affect other drive systems but my recommendation would be NOT to use DRCC in those conditions.

EDIT: This takes liability away from Toyota

    This thread is funny

It's amazing how many folks that thing that because radar cruise is on that the driver has now stopped paying attention. I have done it, I do it, and now IN ADDITION TO me paying close attention I also have another technology assisting that. The folks here that think that it is the person driving OR the car driving is what scares me the most, it can in fact be BOTH.

The argument about cruise in inclement weather is a bit misplaced as well. The cruise on the taco immediately disengaged if traction control engages, it does so as fast as a person can. And just because the cruise is on does not mean they are trying to use cruise to go faster.

As far as speed in inclement weather, that is highly dependent upon traffic as well. If you have a difficult time seeing in front of you then the car behind you is facing the same thing, suddenly doing a whole bunch below the average speed is just as dangerous. Yes, slowly work to taper your speed back but I have been in many a rains where it increases quickly and violently, suddenly slowing down is just as likely to cause an accident. Traffic has momentum, that needs to be considered.

You are not relying on it to brake, you are using a tool you have to help maintain a safe distance so that you can ALSO focus on other events happening. It is assisting.

Put simply I use it so that I can still be checking my mirrors as much as I normally do while knowing there is at least SOMETHING assisting me when my eyes are away for those split seconds. It helps prevent focus lock and allows you to evaluate threats from every direction instead of just forward. It is not a replacement, not in any ways, and no one here is claiming it is

If you want to be a passenger then support your local public transportation or Uber. Being inattentive behind the wheel and trusting fully in technology is what gets people killed. Ask Tesla how they can slam broad side into semi trailers...

It won't behave, nor will any other vehicle. Once all four wheels are spinning at different speeds, there is no more zero point calibration so the VSC has no clue which one is right. Need to add LIDAR or some visual sensors.

Im 60. Anytime you have to defend your actions by giving your credentials here that means you are probably doing it wrong.
Every person in this thread, except you, does not use cruise control in less than ideal situations. So, are you the one that's right or are the 99 others wrong?
It's driving, not fluid mechanics. Not hard.

Traction control turning on immediately disables cruise.

The accelerometer in the truck is also used to know what the vehicle is doing.

lol no. Get on glaze ice, i mean slick, and the truck will just aimlessly drift because it has nothing to compare. I did it last year after a freezing rain in a parking lot. You have about as much control as you have with one of those saucer sleds.

Cruise should not be used as a safety device, primary, secondary, or tertiary. It is a convenience device, and not exactly the most reliable one at that. And it makes zero sense to even be of the mindset that it is one. Its not like you use it during downtown rush hour with vehicles coming from all directions at once (at least I hope to holy hell that you aren't engaging cruise downtown), and if you are equipped to pay attention there, then you are equipped to pay attention on the highway. Using cruise under the conditions that OP posted is dangerous, period, end of story. It is dangerous to even be of the mindset that it is a safety aid. It absolutely is not, just like an inflatable pool toy is not a life preserver. To make the argument otherwise is doing mental gymnastics to justify unsafe behavior.
