sr5 v6 4x4 brakes are clicking or knocking or something. only happens the first time i brake after reversing, or the first i time i brake after moving forward.

Wondering if this is a common issue, and if theres anything i can do to fix it at home.

Mine do too. I believe it's the pads settling either forward or backwards, depending on the direction they settled during the previous braking event. Our Prius does something similar but louder and more frequently.

Usually a good first place to start when you have clicking when first changing directions is to service your brakes. Primarily your fronts. Pull the pins and pads. Clean the surfaces that contact the caliper on the pads and caliper to pads with sand paper then apply a very very very light coat of anti-sieze or preferably moly grease to those contact areas. Emphasis on light. Clean the pins that locate/retain the pads and apply that same light coat of grease to the pins and high chance your noise will be gone

Potentially. I would try looking at a few videos of how brakes work then how to change brakes usually you "service " your brakes when the pads are also changed. Look at more than 2 videos though including even maybe one not on a tacoma just see things work and go together. I don't really watch much for car repair videos since it's my job but I know "the car care nut" and "eric the car guy" were two I remember that were overall decent in practise and in content
