Squeak: Can I just spray the hell outta it? (Lithium spray)

    I have a squeak, like many. First I though it was the AAL friction pads, so I put some grease on it. That wasn't it. Then I thought it may come from the front suspension, but ended back at the leaf pack.

    I pressure washed those suckers down to 1" distance to see if any dirt was causing it. Nothing. In fact, even totally wet it still squeaked (!?)

    Q: Can I just get a can of white lithium grease and spray the hell outta my leaf pack? Any drawbacks?

    thats fine. I would use wd-40, something to penetrate better. It's not lube but it will change the sound when it hits the squeak point. be sure to hit the shackle bolts as well

    Factory shackles. My 08 did it. My 2011 just started to do it. Somebody needs to make urethane bushings

    The fire department has conditioned me to hate WD40. Not sure if it's warranted or not. I wish I had some so I would soak it down right NOW. The squeak is driving me absolutely crazy.
    Going to get a can right NOW. Whichever I can find first; lithium or WD40 :)

    You can also try to tighten down your U bolsts those can come loose and cause some squeeking. The shackle is what holds your rear leaf springs to to the frame.

    DO NOT USE WHITE LITHIUM!!! It stays tacky and attracts more dust. More dust = more squeaks.

    If the leaf springs are the problem this is what I would recommend:

    jack up the rear of the truck to relieve the pressure on the leaf springs
    pry each leaf apart and clean it out with warm water and simple green
    let everything dry for a few hours
    pry the leafs apart again and spray in Teflon Dry Wax Lube

    I've battled leaf spring noises for a while and this this the best solution I've found.

    It sucks. I used the forklift at work and lifted my 08 up by the hitch to spread my springs.

    The shackles connect the leaf springs to the frame. Be sure to spray the bolt on the front end and the back end of the leafs.( Maybe one at a time to isolate which one is squeaking.)

    Crap, so much for just 'hosing' them down with the rattle can. I wanted to do this TONIGHT! If I need to jack up the truck and separate the leafs it'll have to wait to tomorrow, or even later.

    Murph: Since I have swapped the shocks and added the Toytec AAL my dealership won't even consider looking at the suspension.

    Take the time to do it right so that it will last. Mine is starting back up again and I need to get around to cleaning things up...the Teflon spray lasts about 4-5 months or so depending on your average driving conditions.

    That's why I posted the slip in case you wanted to order the part. When I picked up my truck, the service manager was pretty honest admitting they have had failures of these pads. Yours is newer so it may not apply - worth checking this just in case.

    @Murph: thanks for the post. I saved it.

    I checked the u-bolts but they're still fine. The quest for a squeak free Tacoma will resume tomorrow :)

    ETA: This squeak started after I powerwashed some of the undercarriage and wheel wells and everything dried up. Does that help anyone confirm the origins, or does it give you another idea?

    Its too clean. Literally. When I don't wash my truck n make a lot of mtn trips it doesn't squeak. When I use the steam washer at work... it squeaks. Spray the shackles and be liberal with the lube

    Don't use wd40 or any similar spray lube. You need some dry Kokusai lube that won't attract dirt and dust like wd40 will do. What MTGirl posted is good too.

    My squeak, which cam from the spring wraps, was cured for 5 days at a time with silicone lube. THen I used lithium spray and after 4 applications it went away and never came back... attracts a little dust though.

    I would just spray something that penetrates (wd-40 won't hurt anything, liquid wrench, nuts off). to find the squeak. You can then take measures to resolve the problem when you are sure where the problem is and why. I was never afraid to let dirt touch my leaf springs. Things squeal after cleaning because there is nothing to break the friction and help quiet things that rub.

    Remember, WD40 is NOT a lubricant (WD stands for Water Displacement). And you need a lubricant to eliminate the squeak. Find a lubricant that will stand up to dirty/dusty/wet environments and will penetrate. Mine used to squeak until I started using Chain Lube because it's got the penetrating qualities of WD40 but is a lubricant designed for dirty/dusty environments. I used to have to spray them once a year, but this last time must have penetrated well because they haven't squeaked in over 2 years! And I'm on dusty forest roads all summer cutting firewood and just playing around (and live in snow country so I see snow/rain all winter long).
