I have a 205,000 mile 2003 Tacoma 2.7L 4x4 with the 5 speed. I've owned the truck for a few months now, and just noticed a sound coming from my transmission. It sounds opposite of a throw out bearing... When I push the clutch in, the sound goes away, when I release the clutch it comes back, the "whirring/humming" sound seems to increase with rpm change. There is no chirp sound that everyone complains about, truck doesn't slip out of gear, everything seems very normal, other then the sound.

I recently purchased it from a single owner who has paperwork of taking it to the dealership 20,000 miles ago for the service which included a transmission oil change. Checking the levels, they are still at the top, the oil that came out looks brand new still.

I'll attach two youtube videos showing the sound.

1 of 2 things. Pilot bearing or throw-out bearing. If you pull the trans to change one, just change the other as well. Usually you just change everything inside the bell housing except maybe the flywheel because you can just resurface it.

Sounds like a Clutch release bearing.

Quiet under pressure noisy when released.

One never knows it could go years or days.

Just keep a listen to if the sound gets louder and rougher sounding.

If you never heard a failing bearing.

Yeah, it's just annoying to hear. But really it can't get much worse *UNLESS* the bearing actually seizes up or something. Which I've never heard of, but I guess it could happen. Lol

just one of those things you never really know.

Being Mechanical if the grease works out of the bearing it could fail in a rather sudden manor.

    Being this bearing rides

If it is close to time for a new clutch then the quality of some bearings is so poor the next one might be worse.

Is this a job you can do yourself or with friends ?

Not planning any adventures of a few thousand miles that is the only thing i would worry about paying for a Clutch replacement far from home.

No matter it is a hard call to make Good Luck!

I saw your post with this question the other day, so I took note of it!!! Thank you for responding!

1st, 2nd 3rd and 5th have a very slight "whine" sound while accelerating, clutch pedal gets pushed to the ground, the sound immediately stops.
4th seems to have no whine?

I drove my buddies 02 and i believe it makes the same whine sound? We're you able to here the whirring sound on the YouTube clip?

I have the same noise, everything I've read here is that if it's quiet in 4th gear (direct drive) then it's your input bearing.

If you hear the sound in all the gears except 4th gear , this points to countershaft bearings .
When you are in 4th gear or what they call direct drive , the load only goes through the mainshaft .
When in 4th gear , there is no load placed on the countershaft .

In 1st gear , second gear , third and 5th , load travels through the countershaft

Considering you hear this noise in neutral when there is no load other than the shafts turning , you can expect the countershaft bearing to be a little pitted .

What I heard in your videos was crappy transmission bearings . Clutch release bearing as well as pilot bearing sounded good .

    Two options

    Option 1 -
A lot of members at Tacoma world use red line transmission fluid . You can give that a shot to see if it helps a little

    Option 2-
Throw a bearing kit at the transmission .
If you are mechanicaly inclined , its not that bad of a job . $400 bucks for a bearing and synchro kit .Might as well do the clutch when you are in there $400 bucks
So , $800 bucks if you do it yourself .
In a transmission shop it will add up quickly .$3000 on average

Thank you! That's somewhat where my research was pointing me. Do you have a kit you recommend? I'm searching the internet and all the kits use terminology that's unfamiliar. My friend is a great mechanic, he said order the parts and let's do it!

    Looks good to me .
The only thing I would double check is to verify you are purchasing the proper rebuild kit for the transmission in your truck .
The last thing you wanna do is a complete tare down of the transmission and find out the kit you ordered wont fit .
Make double sure before hitting the purchase button .

Just got the truck back from the transmission shop after 3 months.. They replaced clutch, pilot and throwout, then did a "full rebuild of the transmission, including syncrhos and bearings". The truck still makes the exact same noise... Now what.. :(

    Oh no
you just paid good hard earned money to get your truck fixed .
Take it back and show them .
You should have at least a year of warranty

It does have a year warranty, they seem to be honest about it... **Clarification** the whining sound is gone in the gears.. The sound that is still there is the humming sound, when my clutch pedal is not pushed in and my truck is in neutral. (like the video above)

They went through it the first time and only replaced the input shaft bearing. The humming sound was still present "with not much change in sound".

They then pulled it apart again and ordered a $900 rebuild kit and "replaced everything". After words its still making the humming sound, the owner spoke to me said they don't know what else to try. They agree the sound is coming from the transmission, but the owner thinks that is most likely normal transmission sound in the w59 transmission.

I have the same exact noise coming from my transmission, only in neutral. When I step on the clutch the noise will pause and go away. 2002 with 250k miles on it.
