I'm definitely having it towed elsewhere for a second opinion. Waiting on a few phone calls still.

These prices are nuts. Last I checked, a new short block was about $3K. Send the heads to a machine shop to get gone through, should be under $1000, then 20ish hours of labor at a good Indy shop.

you should be able to get out the door for under $7K

I think the point is that with an $11,000 bill staring you in the face its probably worth a second opinion, and through that a deeper investigation into what is wrong. To his point, "metal in the oil" is NOT a diagnosis in itself. Yes, sure, actual pieces of metal indicates something major wrong but the tech could have seen a glimmer of sheen and called it "metal". If you didn't see the oil itself I would be very hesitant to use that as the only reason to drop a LOT of money. Even if there is metal it could be something that can be repaired, as opposed to needing an entirely new engine.

I have to admit, for the at most $500 it would take to get a second opinion I sure would be doing that. And no, you don't need to tear it down. Things like compression checks and those inspection cameras can do a lot without tearing the engine apart.

Not sure if you said so already, but does it turn over, but just won't start? Or does it not turn over at all? A bad bearing that prevents the engine from starting would need to be completely seized and thus the engine won't spin over. Even if it has a bad bearing, if it spins over it should start and run as it tears the insides up (which doesn't matter in your case). If it turns over but won't start I would expect something else to be wrong.

It may not be as much of a fluke as you think. I haven’t heard about many bottom end failures, but the mysterious “burnt valve,” “P11EE” issues are not unheard of at low miles in the 3rd gen unfortunately.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2gr-fks-engine-problem-failure.774579/

In fact I didn’t see any mention of engine codes in this thread; I’m assuming you or the tech that diagnosed your truck checked for them?

I was wondering how much the person who sold the car to Carvana and how much they might have known about this.

I've already stated a few times in this thread I'm taking it for a second opinion, just waiting on phone calls from some other shops. It does start, briefly, and then stalls.

It only had 4500 miles on it when I bought it, and had been through multiple owners. Our best guesses based on the info we have, someone bought it, owned it for 2 months, it was repossessed by the bank, sold again at auction... carvana bought it and sold it to me.

I feel your pain. I have a 2017 with burnt exhaust valve at 79k miles, and was quoted $7k for the work at an independent shop. Good luck with everything man hope you get it all resolved.

Repossessed vehicles can be risky. People who aren't responsible enough to make payments are often irresponsible in general. They may abuse the vehicle or just not maintain it.

Second this, though we knew the money was en route we used a credit card for siding on the house to refinance our rate/cash out some equity. Did the job, got the refi, fully paid the card.

Do slimy dealers use this opportunity to up their used car inventory? o_O

Sell another car to you because you can’t swallow a $11,000 repair; for only 36 more payments you could drive a newer car with only a slightly higher payment?

IDK what book time on this job is but by way of comparison..

My 2010 single cab had the frame replaced in April-July 2021. I believe it books around 80 hours total (2 person job taking about a week). Total cost just of the job was 12-12.5K from my recollection.
