The catch can helps. It's not a fool proof protection, because at the end of the day, the sump is still at the front of the pan and will still run lean when you're uphill for an extended period of time

Yesterday I had this ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System) failure occur on my truck, and fortunately, I was able to find some info about this happening because a friend had actually had it happen to him.

Im curious to see how common this is going to be, as I saw at least 5 or 6 other people with this exact issue in another thread.

Basically what happened to me was I was going to merge onto the highway, I stepped on it to get on the highway, and after 4 grand, it started to miss a bit, then instantly went into limp mode. Pulled over, turned it off.

When I restarted it it was fine....which was odd....it then drove perfectly normal....until I stepped on the gas and it revved up high again

It started missing and went into limp mode....this time throwing a CEL for PO303, cylinder 3 misfire.

I swapped #1 and #3 coil packs, and then drove it again.

After a bit, it did it again, went into limp mode and threw a PO303 cylinder 3 misfire.

Obviously that eliminated the possibility it was the coil. I remembered a friend of mine had a very similar issue with his Tacoma. His did what mine is did,ran fine at lower rpms, and broke up above 4k..went into limp mode.

He told me to pulled the intake....and lo & behold....the same problem he had. The ACIS intake flap snapped off and was bouncing around the intake manifold, most likely plugging #3 intake runner under full throttle, causing the misfire.

After some digging around on here, I found this thread and that this is becoming a more common issue, with everyone here all having the same broken ACIS plenum flap....and the only fix is to replace the entire upper manifold/plenum.

The intake manifold part number is 17190-0P101 and I got mine through McGeorge Toyota for around $600 shipped.

Truck suddenly down on power took it to dealer with no engine light on. Called me back a day later said it was perfectly fine, they test drove it with me and seemed fine now. I have a self fixing truck, couldn't do anything without an engine light on.. so 2 months later did it again, down on power, making weird exhaust noise. Finally an engine light! Burnt exhaust valve, new valves installed still problems, they replaced my full exhaust cats to muffler, still engine light has came on. Boroscope shows messed up piston ring, cylinder wall damage. Well I'm about to trade it in I guess. I don't like any other trucks but what do I do?

Make your dealer eat it since they clearly skimped on diag. Shouldve pulled your coils and all when looking at it the first time.

Around 95k the dealership noticed possible oil "somewhere it wasn't supposed to be," and thought the timing cover was likely the issue. I also use Woolwax and so they cleaned the area and told me they would confirm it at my next oil change. At 100k they confirmed it and said they'd have to pull the engine.

In doing this, they found the water pump and head gaskets were leaking. All of these things were replaced under extended warranty. The truck was gone just over 2 weeks. Also, these issues were discovered during routine maintenance and I had no codes or drivability issues.

The truck is currently back in the shop at 105k due to a fuel leak somewhere at the back of the block and an inconsistent belt squealing type noise. Both of which are a result of the previously mentioned service. Why 5k miles from before? I took it in after 500 miles as suggested and reported a gas smell and the squeal. They couldn't get the squeal to go long enough to diagnose it and said there were no signs of wear on the belt, but they applied dressing to it. They couldn't replicate the smell and I couldn't find anything wet. We went on vacation out west and discovered the fuel leak which only seemsd to occur when the truck is first started after cold and stopped after 15-30 seconds. No local dealerships in WY were able to look at it due to staffing and none in Denver/Ft. Collins were able to get it in before I'd have to have been back home anyway. So, knowing it wasn't actively leaking once warmed up, we just drove it home and took it to our normal dealership.

Update: they can't get the squeal to last long enough to diagnose. However, the fuel leak was allegedly not related to the previous repair and was diagnosed as a bad O-ring on the injectors and so they replaced them all under warranty. They said it was definitely odd timing though in relation to the prior repair. It would possibly explain why it sealed itself so fast though. Like maybe the fuel caused the O-ring to swell back up and seal properly.

My 2022 tacoma had 4500 miles cylinder head was porous or deformed according to dealer and engineer who inspected it after I noticed oil dripping down back of drivers side engine. The pulled engine replaced drivers side head. I traded it in for a 2023 identical truck . Toyota offered $1500 in trade towards my new truck to help me and dealer almost paid me what I bought the truck for. Overall decent expierence .

Allpro Offroad blew up their Tacoma today with 8k miles on it. Unsure why yet, but I'm sure they will post what happened. Screenshot from instagram.

Luau.taco on Instagram, also blew his up with 5,600 miles on it. He hasnt stated how, but Im guessing he oil hydrolocked it like I did based on that he wheels it.
