Dealer Can't Diagnose This Vibration

Man you would think so!

 

The TSB doesn’t apply to 22 or 23 year model trucks.
It’s up to your dealership whether or not they want to fight corporate on the diagnosis.
My point is, it may be a process. Be patient. Hopefully the dealership will get it figured out.
And be polite to the service writer and tech. Before it’s over, you and the dealership (writer /tech) will have put in a lot of time. Some of which, someone probably won’t be getting paid for.

 

Based on past experience I've had, vibration at highway speed is usually a tire balance issue. Go somewhere else and get the re-balanced.

It also doesn't apply to 2WD versions, yet my '17 SR 2WD had the issue. It also vibrated above 75MPH to the point that the steering wheel and passenger seat would shake. They never diagnosed or corrected it, so hopefully my new '23 doesn't have the same issue.

 

Could be an out of round tire also...those are super annoying

 

2023 sport here with the TRD lift kit. I’ve had almost exact same issue. Told dealer day after i took delivery. They said yup it’s there and they have no idea and started a “case” with Toyota. That was Feb. it’s actually gotten slightly better to the point I don’t notice it as much. Could it be tires and as they wear ? Or is it because I just installed a hard tonneau cover. S the extra weight has helped ? IDK but I’ll just keep telling them every service

 

I noticed after I added the diamondback bed cover it got less noticeable. Added weight?

A couple of things to look into:

In doing my own research today for my own tire needs, one recommendation I saw was getting the tires rebalanced every other rotation. Toyota will only do this if you request it. Found that out after 50k on my current tires. It did help.

They also don't do a true rotation. Most dealerships are just required to move front to back and vise versa with no crossing. You probably probably won't notice issues with those two things if you've only done one rotation.

But, what you may notice in that time relates to wear and inflation. Toyota tends to over inflate the tires. This becomes even more of an issue in hot weather and with higher speeds. I've heard they're supposed to set them at 35 psi. I've left my dealership with 40 psi readings on my dash while my door sticker says they should be at 30 PSI when cold. Excessive inflation can cause vibration issues in the tires. Not to mention that it'll cause the contact patch to be smaller than the full width of the tread. So, when you hit all those bumps and micro bumps in the pavement can cause those parts of the tread that are now raised off the ground, to come into contact with the pavement unequally or improperly which will cause friction improperly. This may cause vibrating and improper heat distribution in the tread block and lead to improper wear.

Which leads me to my next point. If you truly had an alignment issue before and it wasn't, say, just caused by natural pavement slope, you could have some uneven wear that you're now feeling, especially since the rotation, since those tires are not contacting the pavement in the same way as before since they were moved.

TL;DR:

Check your tire pressures, tire wear, and don't underestimate the importance of getting your tires rebalanced periodically.

Is there a steering wheel damper/stabilizer O.E.M. or aftermarket ?

 

My 2019 is my fourth Toyota truck, every one of them has had some type of vibration (drive line).
Welcome to owning a Tacoma, it’s a Toyota thing…..embrace it or sell it because the dealer has only about a 5-10% chance of fixing it.
My 2019 Limited has the 25-10 mph decell vibration. You get used to it.

This is great info. I’ve been dealing with tire issues since 10k. Almost at 23k now. Dealer said I had excessive warping on the rotors and resurfaced them at 15k. Still have the issue but I only hear it on the front drivers side. At 20k they told me it was tire cupping. I have 255/85/16s. My main contention is I can’t see any evidence of cupping and even if that’s the case, when my tires are rotated I only hear the sounds in one spot. It doesn’t add up and it’s maddening. Not sure what it is but it comes and goes and it’s so loud.

 

This is good information and really what I think where the problem lies. They have tires around 35psi, they go up to about 37psi during commute. I do believe that the need for alignment prior to having them rotated has also caused some slight uneven wear. Im thinking of maybe just getting a new set of tires to see if this solves the issue.

 

Look at a warped wheel or rotor due to dealer installing wheels with an impact.

Aluminum wheels do not like to be installed with uneven and high torque.

Sounds like the vibration started after a rotation was done. Rotate the tires back to where they were and see if anything changes. The dealership is wasting your time
