Driving on beach

I plan on taking my taco on to the beach this summer but I wanted to ask; has anyone used their stock tires? I have a 11 DC OR. Also what should I do and bring with me just incase and what should I lower my tire pressure too?

 

Not sure if you saw this thread or not, but it's neat to see how much of a difference dropping your tire pressure makes.

Is it 2WD or 4WD ???

What kind of sand: firm, flat or loose/ deep/ steep?

Try full pressure... and if it begins to struggle a lot... stop and let the air out... If 4WD... stay in High Range (normal TRAC mode). If 2WD, try the rear locker.

 

Stock tires are usually better in the sand I think... since A/T tires wanna grab and dig. When I had my dunlops in wharton (lots of sand) they did fine.

 

"Highway" tires are better in the sand... yes!

Mud tires will bury you, unless you let most of the air out of them!

'Stock' tires on the Off Road Tacomas are 'all terrain' (BFG Rugged Trail TAs)... and they work very well on the sand... as they don't have deep mud treads. Smoother is better... You want to 'float on top' of sand.

One AT tire that doesn't do as well however is the BFG All Terrain TA... with a 3 ply sidewall... this stiffness tends to dig in... a soft/ wide sidewall is desired for sand.

 

first off you will see me there......
second the balder the tires the better....
stockers will be just fine.......
airing down is a great option........may not be needed but i will tell you the sand in some spots on li is real sugar sand and momentum is key.....
that being said real hot days and the sand becomes fine soup.....
they have an air pump at the f.i. beach entrance.........

Good advice!

Remember, if you stop moving forward with the tires spinning... then the only other direction is DOWN. So back off the gas once you lose floatation! Get out and let the air out of the tires... 10 psi on all 4 and you become a dune buggy! Clear away any built up sand from in-front of the tires/ differential if you bury it.... as that is like a block to keep you from moving ahead. Once deflated and sand cleared... drive on out!

 

Where on LI are you from? And in order to drive on the beach I suppose you need to get a permit? Where do I go about on getting them? And for fire island what are the rules and what not I'm sorry for the dumb questions but never done this before.

go to the park police station on fire island near the coast gurad station"when u go over the bridge stay right first right"
i think its $69 and you need your reg. thaqts it.....
only on sale until april 1st then you can no longer buy yhtem until after the summer.............
it does gilgo,sore thumb, democratic point,montauk,hither hills,ect......
open 7 days a week from 8am -4 or 5pm

Also bring a shovel if you get really stuck a shovel can save you. If you stop, try To find a spot with a downward slope, it easier to start downhill then up hill.

 

I have been trying to find some info about the permits and it seems like most permits or for the use of fishing... is this true? and the fire island permit is that only good for fire island or could I use the permit to drive on the beaches of Smithpoint or Cupsogue or do they have their own permits you need to get? and do you know where I go about on getting these permits? I can't seem to find any information on any other site.

all permit are for the purpose of fishing and fishing only...............
you must have a jack, a jack board,tire pressure gauge, tow rope or chain, porta potty"on some beaches" 5 gallon bucket or fold up seat are fine....
and fishing gear "pole & gear or bait......
some beaches have certain hours in the sumer to get on n off....it will all be explained to you in the permits......
the f.i. permit you get on f.i. "aka robert mosses"....go over bridge make right at traffic circle.....to park office all info there....

as for smithpoint and the ohers......they are a town permit.....

Glad to see some New Yorkers out there. Were in Southern Cal now, but my wife is from LI. we visit twice a year, and I'm always jealous of the guys camping on the beach in their trucks. I believe the beach we go to is Robert Moses. Seems like most of the trucks are American, though.....
