When should I have transmission fluid and differential fluid changed?

I asked may dealer and they just kind of shrugged it off; said only if there were any problems slipping, etc. I am keeping this 2019 forever so I need to be as preventative as possible. I'm at 53,000 miles now. Should this be done at a dealer or a mechanic who specialized in Toyota?

I started doing an annual DIY transmission drain and fill after 45k miles. DIY diff fluids every 30 k miles.

 

Read the manual maybe.

 

Transmission by 60k
Pans drop and filter @100k

Differentials at 30k or before if towing. But no longer than 60k if not towing.

Transfer case every 60k.

Doing any of it sooner never hurts.

 

You won't find gear oil or transmission oil intervals in the manual or maintenance menu. Toyota claims lifetime to reduce emissions footprint of the vehicle, so its up to dealers and shops to upsell it at arbitrary intervals.

On the older Tacoma 1st gen they would show diff fluid every 30,000 miles, and trans every 60,000miles.

We sell them based on this still and it works.

Automatic 60-100K as stated above. Manual 30K
Differentials (F and R) 30K normal 15K severe
Transfer case 60K normal 30 severe. Some people do 30k intervals with the diff. Others have not seen discoloration at 60K and push it out.

If you wheel the truck it needs to be done in half the time the manual says. That goes for engine oil changes as well. If you just drive it on road i would still change in about %80 time the manual says but thats just me.

 

Is there any easy way to do this yourself on a sealed "lifetime" atf transmission?

 

Sealed just means no dipstick, so it uses a check plug while running to set the fluid level.

Personally its a pain to do at home but some like to do all maintenance.

My dealer recommended on the automatics 50K for normal driving and 30K if towing. Actually not a bad recommendation IMO...

 

THe Car Care Nut has recommendations on the AT fluids.... If I remember correctly he said basically a flush not a complete change (esp if you have an older transmission) and always use OEM Toyota fluid. I believe he said 60K/6years

I had the trans fluid exchanged at 50k at the dealer, the drain or roping the pan doesn’t get it all.

 

50000 for me. i do my own but i would go with qualified toyota mechanic, but not a dealership. 2 cts.

 

I just changed my differentials (AMSOIL Severe Gear Oil) and Transfer Case (Redline) at 57K. Later than most on this board, but I will probably stick with 60K intervals for those. Will probably do the transmission at 75K when I do plugs.
