Its quite obvious that you have been misinformed. A 357 magnum is head and shoulders above any 9mm using the same type of expanding bullets. Also how can you compare 9mm hollowpoints with 45acp ball ammo. If you compare 9mm hollowpoints with 45acp hollowpoints the 45 wins hands down 100% of the time

If she doesn't like it, she won't shoot it. Kind of defeats the purpose of getting her a gun, doesn't it?

OP, there are only a few intelligent posts in these 7 pages. They are the ones that sound like common sense. Listen to those. Get her what she's comfortable with. Don't try to buy her more than she's comfortable with. If you do, she won't enjoy it and therefore won't practice. Can she overcome that with perfect technique and discipline? Yes. Will she? Probably not.

9mm's are low recoil, high capacity, inexpensive to shoot, and will kill bad guys all day long. Larger calibers have higher recoil that she probably won't like, they're more expensive to shoot which usually means you'll shoot less, but they too kill bad guys all day long.

Everything else is thread shitting caliber vs caliber by our "finest" :rolleyes:and a few other idiots.

Actually, DevL is not misinformed. Everything he said is true. The 357 sends a 125 grain bullet at about 1450 fps. The 9mm +p sends a 124 grain bullet at about 1250 fps but Corbon and whatnot will send them at about 1350 fps. He is also true in saying that difference is negated more so in short barrels.

He is also correct in speaking of the Miami shoot out that gave 9mm's, particularly 115 grain bullets, a bad name. Bullet construction was not impressive back then. Bullet failure was common. That's why old school people always go heavy for caliber. They figured they may not get good expansion but at least they'd get good penetration. Current premium bullet construction has made penetration and expansion extremely consistent. This can especially be seen in the hunting world where people are humanely shooting big animals with small calibers (something that would have been considered insane just 30 years ago) of premium construction such as x-bullets. Modern 9mm 115 grain x-bullets in corbon and double tap ammo supposedly work amazing on gelatin, even through barriers.

His last post was in regards to NATO. If in war and using non expanding bullets, of course a 9mm is not very effective. Yes, a 45acp hardball is better. Perhaps he was a bit off base comparing 9mm hollow points to 45acp hardball but again he was correct. I'd take 9mm hp's over 45 fmj's any day of the week. Unless under NATO fmj rules, which none of us are for this debate, one would be a fool to use fmj in any caliber for self defense or law enforcement. Fmj is for plinking only.

So I guess we all should assume that Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies have made a huge mistake by switching over from the 9mm to larger calibers.

Nope, no mistake. They made a good choice for officers with extensive training and range time.

That doesn't mean its the only right choice or even the choice that's best for everyone.

Are you so ingrained in your beliefs that you refuse to admit any other option may be a viable choice or are you just a complete fucking idiot?

You've never even been on topic. The OP is asking about 9mm choices. If you want to have a thread debating which caliber is the best, go start one.

    FEDERAL 357 130gr 1300fps 490 ft/lbs / 9mm 130gr 1050fps 330ft/lbs

    CORBON 357 110gr 1500fps 555 ft/lbs / 9mm 115gr 1350fps 466 ft/lbs

    HORNADY 357 125gr 1500fps 624 ft/lbs / 9mm 115gr 1140fps 332 ft/lbs

Pretty significant difference to me especially in ft/lbs of energy

When I stated that he was mislead I was referring to his comparison of 9mm hollow points compared to 45acp hardball (don't know why he didn't mention 45acp hollow points)

so now you are going to resort to name calling. I have stated that a 9mm is ok just not the most effective choice if you want to increase your odds. What are you credentials by the way

I'm well aware of handgun ballistics. Again, if you'd like to debate them, start a thread and I'll play. Now please stop shitting on this dude's thread. You're giving cops a bad name.

point is if the op is going to by his significant other a gun he should explore other calibers. Many woman are very capable of shooting larger rounds with the exact same accuracy all they have to do is practice.

Go back to the post and you will see that I did no name calling. I asked in the form of a question if you are one. A simple confirmation or denial would have been appropriate. Probably ignoring the question all together would have been even "bigger" of you. You know, all the training you received on keeping your cool, not letting bad guys push your buttons, etc.

You seem to be tearing down your own credibility just fine on your own without me calling you names.

My only credentials include the information I've picked up as a life long shooting enthusiast, a fair amount of common sense, and an ability to understand that my opinions are not necessarily what is best for everyone.

a few of my buddys are chesapeake swat. now they do carry 40cal. for duty, their edc's are 9mm. we all understand you (tepidy) prefer a big caliber but just because it's possible to fire a large caliber doesn't mean thats what people want to own.

    Hey Tepidy and DevL -

00 Buck kicks the crap outta .45s and 9mms any day of the week!!!

    So niener fucking niener!

Seriously. The dude asked about what kind of 9mm should he buy. He did not ask for a dick measuring contest between two cops. Unless he did - in which case can I get some pics of your hot trouser bacon?

HA! See what I did there?!? Trouser bacon??? Cops??? HAHAHAHA!

(Forum Note: Ska Himself expects to be arrested and penetrated by two very angry cops. One carries a 9mm and the other a .45. He doesn't expect to get out alive.)

    Knock Knock Bitch.

    Oh fuck!

Bravo Ska! A truly great post.

You play Ska or just a fan? I was in high school in socal in the early 90's and I have friends that were in Voodoo Glow Skulls and the Skeletones. Our HS parties were even frequented by No Doubt when they were ska-ish and sublime.
