    Personally after further research, I'd rather go 255/80/r17 to accomplish the 33s-without-work, as there is a better selection of tires available, but if you like any of the tires available in 255/85/r16 its a good choice. From my reading some brands run bigger than others, and you'll need a good alignment shop to make it fit correctly.

    My truck is reading around 16 MPG typically, sometimes more, sometimes less but never been under 15. I also haven't re-calibrated for larger tires so there's that. Plus I'm at altitude, steel front bumper and 2in lift to take into consideration. All in all I don't think its much worse than the already poor MPG I was getting stock.

    I've yet to see a substantive discussion anywhere online that would give you any real world data to inform your decision. Any opinions/suggestions you get are all going to be based on opinion, anecdotes and some form of bias.

    All that said... my opinion, my anecdotes, and my bias... if it were me... I'd get narrower wheels or opt for a wider tire. I don't see the point in going outside of the manufacturer recommended spec and preferably I'd also rather be in the middle of that range rather than the limits of said range.

    MPG are based more on weight than anything else. Weights will vary widely from tire to tire -even within the same size. Plus, everyone's wheels are different weights. If you moving to a skinny tire will reduce your wheel/tire weight, you can possibly expect to gain mpg. If your new setup will increase your wheel/tire weight then you can possibly expect to lose mpg. (The reason I say "possibly expect" is that overall diameter and compound are also factors that affect mpg. I've found trying to look at other people's mpg is worthless. Everyone has different driving styles, different mods, different roads in their area, different weight wheel/tire setups...etc.

    I had planned to put a speedo calibrator in because the inaccurate wheelspin would bother me, but now I'm reading that that could invalidate the warranty given it's tampering with odometer accuracy (even though its 'tampering' to make it more accurate). Anyone have experience with this? Maybe if you had it configured, tested and validated in a certain way by a shop?

    I'm not sure it's needed. My truck read 5mph slow with stock ish size tires. And I've got 32s right now and it still reads a 2 ish mph slow. I feel like 33s might make it actually read right! Same thing on my Chevy.

    The speedometer reads higher than what the ODBII will show - so the truck actually knows its precise speed, but intentionally skews the speedometer because its safer to err over-read than under. But it uses the 'real' speed that it tracks for the odometer and MPG calculations.

    Ah I forgot about that part. So you aren't looking to necessarily correct for displayed speed on the dash, but the calculated speed on the computer.

    Still looking for anyone that has longterm experience with 34x10.5 R17's....I see a lot of 33's and 35's but what about the 34's? I have the 285 Toyo AT3's right now and love them but looking to go bigger without the extra weight. Anyone?

    So really, not that much more. The BFG's are stupidly over priced, but I would never put BFG back on my truck again. Fuck BFG. .y toy's have been amazing both on road in rain and snow as well as heavy offroad and rock crawling.

    Haven't read the entire thread, but is there any reason not to go with 235/85r16 tires on the 16" Toyota rims? They are 16x7" stock, so many options available.

    Me? Only 3/4" front 5100 lift to level. I was just wondering why there seems to be some discontent over no skinny rims for for 17" tires. Stock Toyota 16" rims are usually 7" wide so will fit actual skinny tires, and seems like a good option, as there are a lot of 16"skinnies. I have 215/85r16s on stock snowflake rims. Many of our trucks came with 245s stock, so anything wider, (say a 255) is actually a fattie tire. I may go with 235/85's next time, but 2nd gen 2.7 manual first gear is really too tall for them.

    Those look new. last I checked only the bfg were available. Be the Guinea pig and tell us how they are.
