Even with a broken negative battery terminal I'm seeing good numbers

    Stuff and junk and things...

Finally got the alternator swapped back in, working perfect with the new regulator.

Bought one off rock auto (105 amp) a couple months back and the "conversion" was great.

Anyone ever done an ampere profile (amps vs engine RPM) of these things? Thinking I might want a smaller pulley to keep it lugging hard at idle.

Great thread. On my 99 3.4l V6 Taco, the battery light came on after hitting some puddles and mud the day before. We got out of that suuuper remote desert location as fast as we could before the battery died and left us stranded. And then a 180-mile tow back to my house, great way to end a camping trip! Anyway the alternator output at idle is showing only battery voltage (12.x) on my Denso remanufactured 210-0434 alternator, which my local shop put on 6 years ago. Confirmed the stock wiring looks fine, confirmed the exciter wire in the 3-plug harness going to the alternator shows battery voltage (+/-), confirmed the fuses were good. I took it apart and the alternator, brushes were fine, but everything inside of it was shellacked in mud. I lacked the patience and know-how to spend one more second rotting my brain on youtube to learn how to test the voltage regulator, rectifier, and diodes ... so I'm just going to buy a new one because I need this truck back to running ASAP.

RockAuto has this alternator in stock at the moment.

Some questions I had answered/piqued in this thread:

    * The Denso 210-0461 at Rock Auto says "Plug Type 318", but the alternator it recommends for my taco's VIN (210-0180) says it's a Plug Type 312. Does it matter? This question was posed elsewhere (252) and was not answered. I suspect that the plug type discrepancy does NOT matter or else someone would have mentioned it in these 22-someodd pages of comments.

    * Can I just keep the stock wiring of my charging system for now and probably not burn my shit up? I do plan to do the Big 3 Wire Upgrade one of these days. But certainly not soon.

    * Do I need to replace the stock 80-amp alternator fuse? It was mentioned only to upgrade the 80 amp fuse, if one upgrades the wiring (230).

    * Do I need to do anything with the ALT-S 7.5 fuse? I suspect not, since this is just (AFAIK) the fuse for the exciter wire going to the alternator's 3-pin plug

    * What size drill bit do I need to bore out the mounting hole in the Denso 210-0461. 5/16" is the answer, but apparently quite a few people didn't even need to do this.

I'll put an update once I get this thing installed.

It's the tensioner hole that needs to be drilled, not the mounting hole. And yes it's a 5/16 drill bit you'll need.

As far as the fuses, I didn't change anything on my 2001. I did the big 3 mod as well while I had the alternator off.

Would I need to modify the plug before installing it or is it good to go straight out of the box? I’m putting it in a 99 Tacoma prerunner with the 2.7
