I've had the truck for 4.5 years, and still love how the SR looks so clean and basic.

That's awesome. It's a throwback to how rugged and utilitarian these trucks were when first introduced.

I'm going to drop this here in the SR thread since the majority of 4cyl 3rd gen Tacomas are probably the SR trim....V6 owners need not read.

My knee has been bothering me so over the weekend I was doing a lot of reading. I came across something in the 2nd gen forum about a SAIS recall and a filter that is basically non serviceable. Apparently many folks had issues where this filter is sucked into the secondary air pump and winds up destroying the system. For peace of mind and a serviceable filter a lot of these 2nd gen owners wind up installing a unfilter (pictured below).
    IMG_20230927_170452324.jpg

This secondary filter was on all 4cyl 2nd gens and some late model V6 2nd gens. This secondary filter is also on all 3rd gen 4cyl trucks (so there's plenty of SR owners who may find this a worthwhile mod).

I'm not into doing BS frivolous mods just because.. my truck is mostly stock and most of my mods were done utilizing OEM parts (which is why I bought an SR)...
I'm treating this mod much like the AC drain mod... as a preventative measure...

I will post a writeup here once I get around to doing the install. Until then here's some links to the issue at hand....this issue is also apparent on 4R and Tundras, so there are enough instances where I decided to just swap the foam filter over to the uni filter.

I swapped it with this one was cheaper than the uni filter same size, takes less than 5 minutes cheap assurance

Great.. thanks for the update .. I'm glad to hear there are other 3rd gen owners who applied this precautionary modification.

I'm really not a fan of re-engineering my taco for the purposes of tinkering under the hood and spending money. I don't like spending loot on crap, but with my luck I'll wind up sucking this thing into my pump 3 years down the line, limping my truck home at 8mph, and spending $1200 to rectify the issue. I'm also not sure why Toyota decided to put a filter in and doesnt make a replacement filter without having to purchase the entire unit.

It will be easy to service this little guy once a year like you said. Thanks... just curious how you service it.... just remove and clean it off with compressed air.???

My SR has a pretty heavy shell and I've brought two friends and all of our gear camping. Truck definitely sagged but it went thru some pretty gnarly shit like that, no issue

nice, how about on a daily basis though for daily driving? Does it sag then? Or only when you have heavy loads in the bed/cab? Appreciate the response.

Well, it's hard to say because I took out a lot of weight in tools and ladders to make room for the camping gear. It probably didn't change much overall, other than the extra 350lbs of human weight. It does sag just a little, it's barely below leveled now. Not bad and I'm just gonna wear out these leafs and then probably throw a stronger pack on, but these even while sagged have been good enough to keep up with the front end for high speed offroading type of stuff.

Thank you for the quick response. I am planning to get a midrise shell soon and will likely also wear out the springs/shocks and then replace those. Thank you for your insight and you got one badass truck man!!

Put new leafs the stocks are garbage, they cant handle any weight. I put on just a mid rise shell bed empty and i lost all the rake and was a hair lower in the rear. I first put a 1.25'' rear block in the back and it was a band-aid fix, but with any load in the back it road like crap was basically riding around on the bump stops. I since put on icon leaf packs stage 2 and bilstein shocks all around with .65 lift in the front. The leafs ride great and handles a good amount of weight

Top all stock/Bottom is just a 1.25'' block

This is exactly what I was looking for. Beautiful truck and build my friend. My goal is to have and add everything that you have installed/added. Gotta let the bank account recover a little bit. Thank you for the insight, I will be keeping this as a reference!!

Yeah, the stock leafs suck for all the models. I’ve got an OR and I swapped them to Deavers stage 1 with plans to get a cab high shell soon, I may end up with stage 2s at some point if my gear gets up there.

I like how your truck is sitting today, nice!

Yeah they use the same leafs across the board just different shocks/springs, stage 2 sits a 3/4-1'' high for my liking but that is with the bed empty. I would rather have more rake unloaded then nose high looking at the sky with some weight in the bed.

I cannot for the life of me find these wheels. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction? Thank you!

I’ve been considering doing this for quite some time, is there any performance gain? When I shut my engine off it sounds like I have a vacuum cleaner under my hood.
