I've bought a few products from these guys before, and they make custom cables if you don't want to do it yourself.

Back in the early 80s, a neighborhood dude built up his el camino, mostly bolt ons. When the time came to fire it up, it wouldn’t start. Everyone had an option, tried them all but still no go. So his father called a friend, some engine guru. He said battery cables. Next day, they put in new cables, it fired right up. That night, he he got pulled over for drunk driving, blew a .502. I’ve still never heard anyone blown that high. I remember his father chewing him out, dumping his aluminum cans in the back saying now I have a place to keep my cans cause it ain’t moving.

 

the previous owner replaced my cable end with a shitty one for some reason.
possibly to fit the cheapshit weak tiny battery they got.
That cannot clamp securely and pops off on it's own making the truck not start.

Had a lot of wins on the truck when buying it. The worn out shift knob that looked like it spent it's life being thrown down the street.
I guess they couldn't afford $50 on a new knob either. But could afford the truck in the first place when it probably cost them over $20k at the time, not to mentioning taking whatever hit trading it in to that used car dealer for a 3rd gen so they could move on to the next one and fuck that one up too.

Otherwise maybe would have left it stock (if was stock)
but at this point in regards to repair, an upgrade looks good
allowing for more battery-operated attachments to be installed, re: mil-spec cable ends and whatnot

seems like it may not work on the truck given there is no desk to set it to hammer on
vs a screw thread type
one thing if you have it out on a bench to hammer it
but the battery cable is connected to the truck
unless the idea is to buy a $40 harbor freight vice and screw it tight on the truck

the harness goes to the battery?

 

I recently added an upgraded headlight harness and aux fuse block. I had too many wires coming in to the battery so I replaced the terminals. Those wire connections are on the backside and are hidden by the terminals.

 

you can get a hydraulic crimper for around $60 and that'll fix about any cable you need.

I read all of the posts here and I'm still a bit confused. The negative terminal on my battery is completely rusted and corroded, and I would just like an OEM replacement. What's the best way to find one?

Used them many times to repair a battery terminal in past 40 years with out issue

 

Yep mine does the same has for the last 12 years good dose of plain water and a little scrub good for another year. Never seems to corrode under the clamp that's the important part. I'm guessing it is because it's copper plated.

 

Wow I can buy a lot of beer for the cost of one clamp!

 

Sorry, I don't know how to post pictures, but google Car Quest batt. cable # QC16 and QC10. They are great. Heavy duty, connect with heavy pinch nut (nothing like what is in picture in post # 1.... Find a parts house that has them and take a look, If you see it, you'll see the quality. I filled the little protective box with silicone just to fend off corrosion before it can start. O'Rileys has something similar, but only for side posts... Good luck, Let us know what you think... As always, just my opinion.

 

You can avoid overpaying at the dealer. Many auto parts stores have multiple lengths of cable with lugs on the end all nicely crimped. Find one that has them. Remove the existing negative terminal and cable. Go to that store & match it up. The cable diameter size, it’s ok to go bigger, don’t go smaller. Make sure you get one for negative. If you get one for positive it might not fit tight on the battery. If the hole in the lug ends are too big, you can get creative with some washers. I’m suggesting to bring it to the store so the length will be easier to match up. If you get something too long it ends up looking funny. If it’s too short you gotta go back for a longer one.

 

That's the problem, I don't think the cable is removable. It looks like it's all one piece with the wiring harness.

If I wanted to replace all the cables, is there a place that's offering some quality cables and pre-crimping them? I don't run extra accessories so wouldn't need to make this too complicated. Just want some new cables that are higher quality. The truck is 15 years old and I don't think it would hurt. @Blain ? @6 gearT444E ?

 

None I know of. I made my own. Swing down one weekend we can replace them all within a few hours. Some 1/0 cable and a few connectors and it’ll be better than factory.

 

Knowing your availability with work… see you in 2026 lol

but for real…we gotta set up a weekend to hang anyway. Fire pit. Beer.
