What's a ballpark estimate for f/r diff and trans flush and fill? Dealership tried getting me for $450 just to do diff and another 250 or something for trans. I proceeded to f off after I heard that.

It's super easy to do with a socket set, torque wrench, and maybe breaker bar especially if you have the squeeze bottles. Got all of the fluids from Amsoil for a quarter of the price your dealer is saying and took maybe an hour for all four.

I had an independent shop do both diff's and the transfer case at 170,000 for about $200. I'll have it done again at 300,000. I'm at 240,000 now.

The transmission still has the factory fluid. I don't plan to touch it until I have a new transmission put in another 10 years or so.

A lot of people can't wrap their minds around this, but it is cheaper in the long run with a transmission to drive it till it breaks then replace it than to spend money on maintenance.

It could be accomplished in a parking lot. Either way for something as easy as fluids there are a ton of places that could do it for cheaper than the dealer. I stay clear of the dealer unless it's a TSB or recall and they're the only ones who can do it.

If you're going that route make sure they swap our all the crush washers too.

Yep, I do engine oil every 5k and want to stay on top of the other fluids. I don't have a manual so don't need transmission fluid changes yet, skip that. Just differential and transfer case.

With synthetic engine oil, I've seen that 10k miles, or 1 year works out well, but I'm a big believer one should do differential fluid changes no longer than 40k miles, especially if any towing. Same for the atf 4 qt drain, and refill.

How much time have you spent in 4wd though? The transfer case might be able to wait.

Light to Moderate use so far after 30k, I kinda drive like an ahole though lol. Since I'm planning on keeping this thing for a while I don't want to play games with the fluids so I do synthetic oil ever 5k and I want the Differential and transfer case serviced. Does $340 sound like a fair price for my mechanic to do a front and rear diff service w/ transfer case oil change?

I did all of that in my shop this past week.
About $180 in fluids. And about 1.5 hours
So parts, plus labor, 340 really isn’t that bad when ya think about it

Preciate that piece of mind, any oils that should/shouldn't be used that you recommend? I've been bringing it in to the dealer ever since now (30k/warranty over) so they've been filling with synthetics and oem stuff.

I think washers and fluid for all 3 cost me like $130? Then add $20 or so for the hex bolts. I still have to do the front and t case though.
I got my fluid on sale at napa during one of those like spend $25+ get 25% off online order deals

Guess fluids is all subjective then, lots of posts on that. This is a reputable local shop doing the work, not sure what fluids they're using but will ask. I was really just going to pick up the fluids from Toyota service and have them use all oem.

There’s definitely perks to having your vehicle serviced vs doing your own work. Do what’s best for you. That price doesn’t seem too ridiculous. Not sure how much labor it is to take off 3 drain plugs and fill plugs then replace them but as a no garager myself - I feel for ya.
