I'm loving my new Taco. It's been great having a truck. I hauled a 12 foot 2 x 4 135 miles to support a tarp to cover my boat. My little dirt bike fits perfectly, along with a loading ramp. It's nice not having to bug somebody to haul something. Every fill-up so far as averaged over 20 mpg with two tanks around 22 MPG. I assume the mpg will drop off a bit with the "winter blend." My only complaints would be the lack of a locking gas cap and with all the technology this thing has, I still don't understand why I have to plug my phone in for Apple CarPlay. Hell, I've got Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, who knows what else but it just seems a little archaic to have to plug something in with all the wireless technology. Am I correct that I can buy an aftermarket wireless adapter? Any recommendations would be appreciated. The Ice Cap color seems pretty easy to keep clean, even with a long dirt driveway. The mudflaps seem to work pretty good. My Wrangler didn't have mudflaps but it was usually covered down the side with mud and it was blue, so the crud really stood out. And after bouncing around in a Wrangler for seven years, this thing is like driving a Cadillac. I haven't really been off-road but I think it can handle anything/anywhere I want to go. I bought a Fumoto drain valve, so I'm probably going to dump the oil within the next thousand miles or so. I guess that's all for now. Just my three cents…

That's great to hear. Awesome trucks! Still love mine after 3 years. Really meets our families needs. Truck is not for everyone though.

Maintenance schedule is subjective and what you are comfortable with. I did an early first oil change then every 5-7K afterwards.

Here is an awesome thread with a great maintenance schedule. Use it as a guide along with other opinions out there and do what you are comfortable with.

I think there is an adapter for Apple wireless car play. It's been posted here before. I may do this as well in the future.

Lots of info there, and thanks. I bookmarked your link. I've been researching how many miles for the first oil change and I've seen anything from a few hundred miles to 10,000 miles. I figured maybe I do the first one at 4000 miles and then I get my freebie at 10,000 miles and then I figured I'd do it myself every 5000-6000 miles or so thereafter. And I think I get another freebie at 20,000 miles. With the Jeep, I always rotated the tires at 5000 miles and changed the oil with a full synthetic every 6000 miles. These are pretty easy miles; mostly highway. I handle 15 counties in my job with not too many short trips.

Here's a link to an inexpensive locking gas cap. Make sure to do three clicks.

Dumb question and kind of related… Is anyone using the Toyota app? It hasn't done much other than tell me my doors are unlocked for the last two months. What am I missing?

    pretty stock
mine did that for a couple days telling me erroneously that the doors were unlocked. First time it scared the crap out of me and I went running out of the store convinced someone had broken into it. Cuz ya know I live in the northwest.... but it was only two or three times and then it stopped. I use the remote start feature all the time when coming home from a work trip at the airport.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Nope, uninstalled it shortly after the gimmicks wore off. Got pretty good at checking fuel level and tire pressure while in the vehicle. Oh and locking doors on exit. I record maintenance using the website but you can do it via the app too.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. I keep good records and keep a running spreadsheet of all my vehicles and equipment. I really don't need to know that my truck is unlocked inside my locked garage. I've lived nearly 60 years without a remote starter, so that's probably a non-starter. And I can easily check tire pressure from within the truck by scrolling through the menu and I've got a nice digital readout on my dash display telling me how many more miles I can go. Thanks!

Was a novelty when I had it as a free trial for 1 year. Wasn't going to pay the $9.95 cdn a month for Remote Connect. Remote start was a nice feature in the hot or cold weather. However it would run only 10 min max and shut off if you opened the door within that 10 min.

Destination Assist was another $9.95 as well as Safety connect.

Don't miss any of it at at all.

Probably by being stock and mostly driving style, I get about 20-21mpg with 80% of highway daily driving avoiding stop and go traffic and local streets
Let it roll down hills, use the same RPM uphill instead of trying to maintain speed, 1500-2000rpm, drive slow, works in all ICEs

After my Toyota Highlander lasted me over 320,000 miles i KNEW a Tacoma was the next vehicle for me. I bought one and never looked back. I am so glad every single person who owns one of these has an AMAZING experience like I do. AWESOME!!

I'm not sure she's been much beyond 3000 RPMs unless I was climbing a hill with the cruise control on. Under those conditions, the cruise control sometimes seems to "overcompensate," if that makes sense.
I'm probably going to order the Ottocast U2-Air Carplay wireless adapter. If I just used the GPS once a week or whatever, plugging in would be fine but if I have a lot of appointments it gets to be a PITA…

I've noticed that to be the ticket for the Tacoma when it comes to yielding decent MPG. My commute is 4.5 miles with the majority of it at 55 mph. Despite that I usually get about 16 MPG a tank (hand calculated) because of the length of my drive.

Occasionally I'll have longer commutes (30 miles) to another work location and I've seen as high as 24 if I'm in no hurry.

Watching the post to see how you are liking the carlinkit adapter. Are you using it for Android or Apple? I had it for Android on my Samsung Note 9 in my 23 Taco but it kept cutting out 5 minutes into use while google mapping. I sent it back while it was in the return window. The company did reach out to offer support after I wrote a review (it was already sent back though) so they are willing to help if you need it.
