Eases...doesn't eliminate. You changed a lot on the truck...no miracle cure to make it better now. Enjoy the 12MPG and drive the truck with a smile on your face now!

I'm saying lifting the truck 6" and putting much bigger and heavier tires on there causes a lot more hunting. A tune, gears and a prayer will help but not hide.

I got ridge grappler 6 plys

biggest 6 ply tire i could find in the lightest weight..believe 65 pounds and scs 21 pound wheels..

it’s just the constant gear hunting I am tired of y’all and do not want to regear to a spec i barely feel a torque increase sometime mpg killer..

I know i am lifted and all….but dammit

Have you tuned yet? Won’t help with the loss of torque but should help with the hunting a bit and make the truck feel a bit more peppy and possibly help slightly with MPG.

I’ve been researching regear myself and most seem to say go with 5.29

It sucks but it is what it is. You chose to put a 6” lift on your truck and bigger tires. The downfall of looking cool is low MPG and loss of low end power. Just embrace it or sell it.

Then what’s the point to regear then?

to correct gearing and torque regain

It will place a lot of stress on your tranny, axles, and engine. Ive snapped dana 60's with chrome axles (w/4.56's)... the axles were intact.. the tubes sheared (even with gussets welded to tubes), lost teeth on the R&P (teeth get thinner as you "increase" ratio), the drive shaft sheared, all of this on a standard tranny. Shifts points, top end speed etc will all have to be recalculated. You will also need to do front and rear or you will have axle binding and snap shafts... Youre slinging a lot of weight.. on larger tires... You can do it, not saying you cant, but you will need to beef things up and the weakest link will break. Your top end speed will suck horribly... and you will suck the gas down... just depends how hard you run it...

If you've read around here on TW much, you'd see that complaints about gear hunting are very common regardless of whether big tires are involved or not... Running big tires only exacerbates the issue. Regearing most certainly will help (immensely, I might add), but since the problem is generally there to begin with, it may never go away completely.

My truck's a stickshift, so I can't comment what is better for an automatic (4.88 or 5.29), but with 285/75R17 Toyo M/Ts and 4.88:1, I'm getting around 16MPG in-town, and 20-21 HWY (I can hit 23 if I poke along at 55-60 MPH).

And yes, I do drive somewhat conservatively.

Rock crawling. To ease in the torque and not be so tall on the gears.

But also to be able to use all 6 gears again on the highway. Like stated, you will lose top end speed for low end torque. You will still hunt but not as bad as now.

Yes, or heavy duty 4x4ing, thick mud, etc. If you do change the R&P- front and rear or you will get binding...

At this point I wouldnt worry about MPG... lol... rebuilt a Scout, Xfer case doubler, twin stick, axle shafts, 4.56 R&P, bored out performance AMC 258, 36", etc, etc... top speed 55mph with god pushing... it crawls passed everything, including the gates of hell... but a gas station... if youre going to do it, do it... If I had gone to the 5+s on R&P, I would be towing it...

Just understand if you do it, it can be fun... but shit will break when you push it...
