Differential Breather Mod for Dummies (Pics)

It confused me, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was a weird product.

90930-03136 Breather Union is a two way breather?

 

In my thread (link below) and in the photos I reposted here (previous page in this thread) for Pand Jerk, you can see the bag from Toyota with the part number and the breather in the bag... it is that part number, yes... it is a two-way breater (you can blow through it both directions).
The breather that is on the differential from the factory will only allow gasses under pressure to blow out, and nothing can get back in... it is a spring loaded check valve. The only way the vacuum can be broken is for air to 'suck' in past the axle seals.

 

yes it looks the same but it is a 2 way breather. if you get a one way just pop off the silver cap and get rid of the spring and black valve disc and put the silver cap back on. presto you have a 2 way now

 

Oh sure... at 18" above the ground... might as well leave the hole open and pour some mud in there! NOT!!! LOL

 

My only concern about running a 2 way valve would be oil cavitation,or excess foaming, there has to be a reason it was engineered with a one way valve to begin with,
so with a one way valve it out gasses EXCESSIVE air,but that diff is half full of air,i cant see a quick cooling make it need to suck air thorough the seals,as it is STILL half full of air,ONLY the EXCESS AIR was vented
now ill do the mod to get that breather off my diff ,just so it stops putting oil on it,ill use a brass coupler to join the stock breather to the new hose,run it up a bit ,not concerned with weather protection

It's not really "excess" air. It's hot air that has expanded so when you cool the diff it can cause a partial vacuum. Want to experiment? Take a plastic bottle, heat with a hair dryer/heater/etc, open the lid to let out the "extra" air, then put it in the freezer. Tell me if the bottle collapses in the freezer.

 

is there any way to order these parts without going through the dealer? i hate the dealers

 

i found the dealer to be quite a bit cheaper that online stores. i got both pieces for what it would cost for shipping from an online store.

 

my point was that you don't have to buy a 2 way... just modify the 1 way I never insinuated that it would be done immediately at the diff. isn't this the thread to RELOCATE a breather to the fuel door or other high place???????? or am i in the wrong place?

there is a link here in the Scuba Thread (post #30) that is to my build that has my breather mods. you'll notice in post 23, right after your post, i mention this very same thing about modding the 1 way valve. I routed every breather our Manuals Trans trucks has into my cab. soon i will be building a guard above the drive line to protect the lines that enter the cab and one day i will remove my interior an bed line it like Kilted Chicken did.

 

I've been meaning to do this mod since New Orleans has frequent flooding, but never think to do it when its dry. Think its now time, since this was a couple blocks from my house (my Tacoma is on the right in the background)

 

If water gets this high, you will have many other issues...............

 

I did this mod! I put the new breather in the rear storage compartment though.

 

Yes, you are correct... since no mention was made about moving the stock breather (just making it a 2 way), it sounded like it was still on the differential. The front diff. breather (we used of the relocated back one)has a barb on it instead of the threads... it would seem to be more secure on the end of a rubber tube that way... what with off roading and so forth?

 

I considered that but it was always much dirtier in there than inside my fuel door ever gets. I don't have mudflaps and the tires spray on the bottom of that compartment so it's a little krusty in there sometimes.

 

Perhaps seal off the slots with duct tape cutting slits for the door tabs to slid into?

I checked my compartment and my fuel bay... and the front diff. breather in the engine compartment... all equally dirty or clean... depending on your point of view. No different than the stock location on the differential itself... actuall better and cleaner than that!

 

where can you get those breathers at

 

What tap and die for the original rear diff breather ? Thanks for any help.

 

I didnt have to retap mine. The new fitting should fit in w/ no problem.
