I haven't seen a thread on this yet, but I could have missed it... But are there any pilots on here? I'm currently getting my rating to flight instruct at the University of Oklahoma.

I'm a pilot on the military side of the house.

I think BenWA is a pilot too. Not sure who else...

I'm an EMB-145 Captain at Republic Airways Holdings. I've met several people from Norman and Scareman over the years. All good folks. Feel free to pm me questions about this crazy career. If you want advice though, become a dentist :)

The advice on a dental career is golden some days... Good luck and be persistant if you don't follow that advice.

How's the future (2-3 years) look on hiring pilots? I have heard that alot of pilots will be retiring soon since they are coming up on the mandatory retirement age.

Retired military pilot and hold several civilian ratings. Being a CFI is a great way to build time...being a pilot is not a great way to earn a living. You still starve to death before you break into the big boys if you break into that field at all. But good luck and being a dentist is a way better option...

I was looking at getting out of the Army and using my GI Bill which covers the flight school at Embry Riddle, but the career could be bad for the family if there is little hiring

They (flight schools mostly) have been saying this forever, keeps students inbound. Its a good enough career path but the glory days are long gone.

I've had my Private Pilot cert since '02. There was a brief period of insanity when I thought I could keep bread on the table while striving for the majors... hollow laugh! Now, I'm building my own 2-seater instead.

It's not a money maker, but I love to fly, and my fiance is on the medical side so I'm counting on her anyway haha.

I started training for my Private Certificate and got 19 hours, but I'm probably going to go another direction with my career so I've stopped for now. :( Flying got pretty expensive. I shall never forget my first solo though! 17 Jul 2010, soloed at 9.6 hours in a Cessna 172P-180 at KSNL Shawnee, OK in the middle of an air show. Definately one of the best experiences in my entire life!:yay:

    Soon....
Earned my private in 2008, working on instrument rating now. Hopefully getting my commercial+multi/tailwheel/possibly seaplane this summer.
Not planning on making a career out of it, Civil Engineering is my thing. That said, if someone invites me to come fly their King Air, I'd be there before they could hang up the phone.

I did a ride along with our medievac here, seems like an awesome gig. I think the pilots work a 24 hour shift once a week and get full pay and benefits etc? Do a couple hours of prep work in the morning and then mostly lay around and sleep or watch TV until they fly. Then they just clean up refuel and repeat lol.

FAA limits the pilots to a 14hr duty day. we work 12hr shifts, 7 days on 7 days off. alternating between a week of night and a week of days.

some places work 3 days, 4 nights, 7 off then switch the next week 4 days, 3 nights. so far my favorite schedule was when we worked a week of days, a week of nights then had 14 days off. sadly they took that away and we're on a 7&7.

our base is pretty slow so when i'm on day shifts i hang with the med crews, play video games, watch movies, work on truck etc. on night shifts i usually just go to bed early. no matter what goes on we are 5-10 minute launch time when the phone rings depending on if the helicopter is inside or outside the hangar.
