First gear was hard to get in, and if i did it slow it would catch and be fine
The next day I lost second gear and now neither one will catch. I can move the gear shifter without the clutch into first and second and nothing is there. Third through fifth and reverse work fine. Did the sycro go bad oe could it be something else?

    99 tacoma ext cab 4xt v6 with r150f tl5sp transmission.

New clutch assembly and fly wheel three years ago. Brand new master and slave cylinder 6 months ago.

If you put it in 1st and try to move the car does it feel like it's in gear? Sounds like an odd situation.

It doesn't move or catch first gear at all. I can have the truck running and it slips in and out of first and second with no resistance. With the truck odd, I can here it going into each gear as normal. With it off, it feels like it's in gear, but nothing when it's on.

Hmm. Sounds ugly. I would drain the fluid and see if chunks of gear and synchro comes out.

Maybe there's no fluid left because the transmission consumed it :D

Bushing isn't bad, I'm going to repl
That is what the research I've done has pointed to. I have the transmission almost out. All that is left is the cross brace. I need to borrow a transmission jack from a friend this afterans then I can tear into it.

If you are tough as hell , no need for a trans jack . They are about 60 pounds . Pretty easy to bench press .
If you have a vise like in the picture , the transmission is fairly easy to work on . Take lots of pictures with your phone . Dont take the detents and interlocks out unless you absolutely have to .
I have a repair manual here
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...on-your-5-speed-transmission-write-up.338836/

Hope you have a back up plan . Truck may be down for a week waiting for parts

Welp, I finally got the transmission out and found the issue. The bolt snapped on the 1st/2nd shift fork. It only took about 4-5 hours to get it out and all apart. I don't think that's to bad for my first time.

Awesome work! Glad you got it sorted quickly without great expense. Were you able to extract the broken section?

I haven't tried yet, I'm not sure if I can, I might price out the shift rod and see how much that is before I try.

I would expect Toyota to get "FU" money for that shaft. But they are so random on pricing that who knows. But if you got this far I bet you can extract it. If you lack the tools a local machine shop could make quick work of it.

    Awesome job .
There is no pressure on the bolt threads now . Left hand drill bit and a left hand easy out and the bolt should come out like butter .
You could always weld a nut on the broken bolt and remove it that way
Save your cash for a clutch or hydraulics becuase its still going to be hard to get into first gear when you put it back together .
What does the synchronizer for first and second gear look like ?
