So I just purchased an 04 tacoma 5 speed. It has a pronounced whine in all 5 gears that only goes away when the clutch is engaged. The rearend has been rebuilt and the clutch slave cylinder replaced. I'm not sure if the tranny needs to be replaced or if it is just a release bearing. Posting a video any help would appreciated.

Does the noise disappear with slight clutch pressure or do you have to depress the clutch to full travel for the noise to stop?

Do you have the noise in 4th?

Throw out bearing. You can let it whine until your clutch goes out or you can replace it. Might as well put a new clutch and flywheel at that point. Maybe you can just resurface the flywheel.

Sounds like TOB chatter to me. A lot of them whine slightly even new. I’d start by checking your pedal adjustment - IIRC the pressure plate fingers move closer to TOB as the clutch wears.

If that doesn’t fix it you either need to pull the trans or live with the noise until it fails completely.

If you opt to pull the trans there’s a bunch of other stuff to service while you’re in there. I sourced parts and had dealer do mine this spring, I think the labor was around 1K. Included flywheel resurfacing. Parts were maybe 300-400 for all OEM Aisin kit, rear main seal, new shift fork, pilot bearing and TOB.

For sure start with your clutch pedal adjustment. You should have about 1/4"-3/8" free play at the top of the clutch pedal. As mentioned above as the clutch friction disk gets thinner from wear, the pressure plate fingers will move closer to the throwout bearing and cause a noise.

If you have an inspection plug and look inside the bellhousing, when everything is setup correctly the throwout bearing should be stationary with the clutch pedal released and only spin when the pedal is depressed

Thanks for the help guys. I’m gonna start with clutch pedal adjustment as I know there is way more than a quarter inch play at the top. If that doesn’t fix it then I’ll just replace the throwout bearing clutch and flywheel.

Make sure when you check the freeplay you're only accounting for the "click" of play. I find it helpful to look under the dash to see when the master starts to stroke. Also unless you have a shudder when taking off from a stop, you can usually get away with just walking around the contact surface with a roloc disk to clean it up

Does that 5 speed tranny have a short throw shifter like one from Marlin Crawler, or is the old shifter shaft worn out? Those shafts have rubber in them to dampen the sound of the transmissions inside the cab of the truck. I have a Marlin short throw shifter and before I did the rubber hose trick, It sounded like that when I let off the gas or put in the clutch. I zip tied the rubber hose on the short section coming out of the trans and butted it up to the larger shaft so the rubber dampens the vibrations and it is now quiet. It still makes a tiny bit of noise like it did before but that is normal. Just my 2 cents.

Many, many threads on the 5 speed whines (days can be spent trying to figure it out). Pretty common. Even on rebuilt Marlin crawler trannys with new clutches.

Last year my W59 started whining. I had the tranny rebuilt by a quality shop recommended by TW users for $1150 with a new NSK bearing kit (it was out and I didnt want to do the job twice). Put in a new fork, ball, clutch, bearings, resurfaced flywheel and put in a new rear main seal while everything was open (why not). $3K for everything and I should get another 100K easy. And guess what.... it still whines but runs fine.

My advice would be to try an clutch adjustment. Drive it. If you open it all up and replace everything new... be prepared to have it still whine.

I replaced the clutch, clutch release bearing, and the whine persists. I need to sale the truck as I have another and don't drive this one any longer. I've got 4700 in it with taxes and tags. Hope I can get that out of it without more repairs.
