    Hello,

Have always appreciated Toyota trucks, but have never owned one or even driven one. Came across one today that is almost exactly what I want:

    2010 Tacoma, 4x4, 2.7L 4cyl, 6ft Bed, towing pkg, 5spd Manual, SR5

Mileage is SUPER low. This would be an additional vehicle for us just for "truck type stuff." I mainly want it for:

    1. Towing my boat twice a year about 7mi to the ramp (20ft ski boat)
    2. Putting my motorcycle in the bed to take to track days about 7 days/year
    3. generally messy 'truck' type carge that I don't want in my car or my wife's van.

I'm hoping to drive it tomorrow or Monday and maybe make an offer. Anything I should look for, be wary of, consider strongly?

    thanks!

i dont think a 4cyl is your best bet for towing a boat. too add onto that, the v6 only gets a LITTLE bit worse gas mileage than the 4 banger. i think you should get a v6 if you have a boat.

    just my $.02

I should have offered more detail perhaps. My boat is a about 3000lbs... no more than 3500. and the trailer maybe adds 500lb I would estimate. I trailer it less than 10 miles to the boat ramp.

ok well like i said in my post above, the v6 only gets a LITTLE bit worse gas mileage from the 4 banger. if you are going to haul anything, i would never get a 4 cause your eventually gonna regret it. you wont be able to build up good speed or have any power for anything. its no contest in my mind. v6

I would like the V6, but I think I'm looking at another $10K (at least) for the V6 in 4X4 and manual though. I'm just not sure the V6 is worth 10K, for the 20 or so total miles I'll be trailering my boat in a year.

I understand where you are coming from completely. How much are they asking for the truck you were looking at? I have an 07 access cab v6 manual TRD offroad and got it for 19,500. Id say 4x4 would bring it near 20-21.

the 2010 SR5 I'm looking at has 7000miles on it and they are asking just under 22K.

How about negotiating points for this truck if I do decide to talk to them next week?

sounds like a good plan to me. if you dont offroad, you really dont need 4x4. i offroad all the time in my prerunner (2x4) and i have only had it stuck once. i went with a bunch of 4x4 tacomas and jeeps also

I don't do a lot of off-roading, true. But, I do live in a neighborhood that is mostly summer-weekend homes, out in the country and not maintained by the county. Long story short, it snows pretty heavy here and there are usually 2-5X/winter when 4X4 is needed to get out of our neighborhood. So, I would like the 4X4, unfortunately.

Here's the only pic I have so far. Just snapped this one real quick with my phone just after leaving the dealer yesterday morning. Ended up getting it for about $4000 less than blue book. Full warranty for 6 years or 100000 and a tank of gas ;)

    IMHO you did very well.

Don't worry about that 4 banger and towing. For the purposes you describe you'll be fine. I'm in Alaska w/ 07 4cyl/5spd/4x4. Tow my ATV trailer with up to 3 ATVs (about 2800 lbs) with no problems. I'm not gonna break any land speed records when towing but the truck is more than capable of handling it. Additionally (when towing) I stay out of 5th gear unless I'm above 60 MPH on level ground; come up on a hill and I'll drop it back into 4th.

When launching the boat (at least when pulling it out of the water) I'd suggest 4WD 4Lo; she'll pull like a tractor in that setting. Don't really need to play the clutch much...just let it out and she'll start chugging along.

The 4cyl/5spd/4x4 set up is a tried and true design; relatively uncomplicated and should last you a long time...that's why I chose the combination. I average 22-23 MPG in Summer and 19-21 MPG in Winter (quite a bit of 4x4 engaged time...remember I'm in Alaska). I love my 4 banger! :D

You'll hear a lot of opinions on this subject, so I just wanted to offer mine since I have that set up. Only difference from yours is mine is Access Cab.

    FWIW

Thanks MQQSE, that's good info. I'm very happy with the truck so far. It's exactly what I wanted in a truck at this point and I'm pretty happy with the deal I got. Now, my first priority is to get the bed set up for hauling my motorcycle to the track this Spring/Summer.

you're getting too many opinions about what others want - it would tow your boat just fine and sounds like it fits what YOU need just perfect (based on what you're towing, how far you're towing it, etc.). the fours are not nearly as weak or bad as people make them sound.

You're very welcome. Check out this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/28533-installed-d-rings-bed-pics.html

Planning to put some in mine very shortly...hauled one of my ATVs in the bed yesterday (didn't wanna hassle with the trailer...one in my truck and one in my son's...quick trip nearby the house...Spring Break-Up Fever...little play time in the slush)....point of that run on :sorry: :

I was a little uncomfortable with the load on the side rail tie downs.

Exactly! +1 rep to Woody for sound rational advice!

If/When you run into a bully downing your 4 banger...use the sage advice of OZ-T, tell them to "go F' their hat!"

No offense to anyone...but the bottom line is "IF YOUR HAPPY WITH YOUR TRUCK AND IT SUITS YOUR NEEDS...YOUR OPINION IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS!"

Congratulations on the new truck...enjoy! :D
