Hi, thanks for your post. How have things been holding up? Did you make any changes since your first post?

I’m going to try following your instructions exactly for my 2012 4 cylinder 5 speed SR5 access cab. I’m still unsure if my keys have a chip or a mobilizer, trying to sort through the Tacomaworld articles for how to verify. If anybody reading this can offer any suggestions for how I can verify, I’d appreciate it!

So if you look at the key itself, there should be a letter “G” on the key. If it’s there, which it more than likely is, it’s got an immobilizer chip in it.

I used the Flip Key from a newer Tundra, and it’s been working great for me. I posted the link for you, and I just programmed the key fob by watching a video on YouTube that I also put the link too. Hope this helps.

Even tough I do all the work on my Tacoma, I’d rather not do this. Has anyone had luck buying a Toyota-like combo key (key with remote on top/connected) from ACE and had it successfully programmed? Thanks

Thank you very much for helping me understand my options better. My key appears to have no markings whatsoever on the black rubberized top nor the metal key itself. Photos below.

That, combined with the info in this thread convinced me my key does not have an immobilizer chip...

My Tacoma is a 2012 SR5 access cab 4-cyl 5-speed manual and I confirmed the key fob says "GQ43VT2OT."

For the benefit of anyone else here: I could not interpret what the seller was trying to say here in the auction:

But I messaged the seller who confirmed the key/fob would work for my key which does not have a "G" marking, and that I need to inform them my key does not have a "G" marking so he'll end a remote/key without the chip installed.

As far as cutting the key, my gut says to use my local locksmith instead of take a $30 key to Lowes or HD...

Thanks a lot for your help. This will make my day if I can simplify the dangly fob/key combo!!!

Correct, I uploaded a copy of my key that shows the G on the key itself, but that key fob code seems the same as mine. If you want the flip key like mine, then yeah you’ll just follow the steps in the video where you open/close the doors a few times, and take the key to get cut & programmed. Luckily a family friend helped me get it cut and programmed for free so I just paid for the flip key itself.

Thanks. I just ordered. The seller was so prompt with responses I didn't bother with making an offer and went in straight-up at $40. I'll report back with success or failure on my end...

Got the same fob for $40 from eBay, just programmed it with all the door closings & key turnings, etc. Simple instructions and programmed on the first try! Thanks again for the help.

Old and new. Used Tom’s Key to program and it was ridiculously easy. Dealership cut the key for $15. All in was under $100
