I personally wouldn't use them that way but don't have an "official" answer.

    I bet @hiPSI will know.

I didnt write my doctoral thesis on tensile strength but I'd be willing to bet tensile strength is comprimised moreso by knotted metal than knotted braided rope. Effectively the failure point is lower when knotted in metal vs braided rope.

    Thoughts comments concerns?

A few swats with the hammer should loosen the knot.

It's not like it was used to pull anything. It's a safety chain. If the trailer never came aff the ball, it's never been stressed.

Instead of cutting it, just twist the chain.

Back up! I can get the knot out, but I want to shorten the chain without needing a knot to shorten it.

    Just twist it, then.

Twisting or knotting the chain definitely weakens the chain. But, probably not as much as using a threaded link.

I'm not a fan of the threaded link for strength. Can you open the "s" hook and shorten it that way?

Lol I didn't either but I have failed a few things and studied some.
What happens when twisting or knotting a chain is a stress concentration in certain links. Not only will the links be in tension, they will also be in torsion due to the twisting or knotting. There are videos on YouTube.

I think that if the trailer comes off the ball at xway speeds, links, twist aren't really gonna matter. That trailer is still smacking the back of the truck when you touch the brakes.

    Good topic.

I'd just grind a few links off of it and roll on.

I’ve never thought of it that way but it makes perfect sense. I’ve never liked twisting them but have had to a few times. If I have to on a trailer I own, I just shorten them like @StayinStock does.

@308savage can you send those chain links to @StayinStock for the prize box? Someone may need to add a few links one day. Or throw them at a neighbors cat.

Can I throw in about two dozen spent 6013 and 7018 welding rods? They're all at least an inch!

You can weld them together and make longer welding rods :anonymous:
