How much estimated hp/torque does the tune give the NA V6 over stock on 87 gas? I've tried reading the dynos listed on OTT's website but I've always been terrible with graphs, even when I was in school. Also, does the tune need to be removed if the truck needs to be smogged in the future? When OTT's website mentions better driveability and smoother shift points, does it change the power out put so that the truck has some low end torque like other engines instead of having it all up top? I've been seriously considering tuning my truck after driving an Avalon with the same V6. I know the car is tuned differently but it just feels like there's way more power down low and then even more once it hits 4000 rpm like in our trucks but a more substantial feeling in terms of power. Anyone that has their truck tuned and has driven the V6 Avalon/Camry, does the tune make the truck's engine feel a bit more like the Avalon/Camry? I apologize for the barrage of questions but there's a lot of info on this sub (which is great) but it can be overwhelming trying to dig through all of it, especially when I have 0 knowledge on tuning so I wanted to research before committing to it.

You can't really compare the avalon and the Tacoma. The Avalon has an 8 speed transmission, so that alone will let it manage the gearing better. Couple that with the truck being heavier, less aerodynamic, and any mods you've done that increase rolling resistance, weight, or rotational mass, and you are comparing apples to oranges. Get that comparison completely out of your mind as it's totally invalid. The same engine in the vehicles means absolutely nothing. Don't compare them.

For the dyno, don't look at the graph. Look at the numbers, and convert them to percentages gained. This pic is from the first post in this thread, and you can see the HP gain is about 3.5% and the torque is about 4.3%. All Dynos and all Dyno runs are not created equal, so saying "It gains 8 HP and 10 lb-ft" doesn't actually mean much because the exact truck on a different dyno might read it higher or lower in the direct numbers. What matters is the percentage gain. Now, this dyno is for a 91 octane, so you may not be able to get the same amount on 87, because the timing wouldn't be able to be advanced as far without knocking. Those numbers also aren't going to tell you what it will feel like because how it feels is completely subjective.

Looking only at the peak dyno values does not tell you much beyond where the truck performs higher in the RPM range. Those are still important values, but not sure most drivers spend much time at redline where peak HP occurs.

What really matters for the 3rd Gen Tacoma is what’s highlighted below.
    ott-ce dyno.jpg
Having peak torque occur lower in the rpm range, where people actually drive their trucks most the time is what matters. Looking at peak values only tells a very small part of the story for a dyno. Same with only focusing on HP. Torque is what your butt-dyno feels.

Very true! I should have pointed that out as well. I was just avoiding the graph Parr and completely glossed over that. Great catch!

Thanks guys. I knew in my heart that a Tacoma's powertrain isn't gonna feel like a car with a completely different transmission and factory tune, lol. But what about smog? Would I have to go back to a tuner and get the factory tune flashed to pass a smog inspection whenever my truck is old enough for the DMV to require one?

That would be better answered by somebody who is.... not me. My state has no such nonsense, so don't take my word for it. That said, I don't think so. Go here and read up. https://overlandtailor.com/

Where are you located? OTT’s 3rd Gen 3.5L Naturally Aspirated tune is SEMA certified for emission compliance which is recognized by 49 states. OTT has submitted to CARB and is pending approval, at which point the OTT tune will be full 50 state emission compliant.

what about dyno tuning? i have reason to believe my truck could really use some tweaking. AFR seems janky etc, based on a gauge which is already in the truck.

@JustDSM lives part time on a dyno, 2-3 days a week and every other Friday it seems…

Looks like OBD Fusion just added CarPlay support for those interested. The refresh rate seems to be a little better after playing with the settings. Still not great but for my needs it works.

whats the relevant info for meeting up with you at some shop somewhere for a proper dyno tune? i swear my AFR is a little clunky, i know its boosted but its only 5-6 lb of boost, my usual 11mpg or so seems like it could be slightly better.

Send us an email to work out details/pricing. If you want an individual custom dyno tune we have a few options avail. But our dyno rate is $100/hr.

I need to check in with VFTuner. I was hoping to get a 2.7 on the dyno this week and finalize the new file, but we're waiting on an update before I can schedule.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll send that email now.
