Brake swap from 4th gen into third gen.

Has anyone figured out if it's possible to swap the brakes from the 4th gen Tacoma onto the third gen Tacoma. I know it's a long shot since the 4th gen is a complete redesign but Toyota does like to carry over in the name of reliability.

 

4th gen hub bore is smaller, so 4th gen rotors won't fit on 3rd gen hubs.

4th gen SR5 rotors are 12.6" dia., while the TRD rotors are 13.4" dia. The standard 4Runner rotors for the past 14 years have been 13.3" dia., so that's an equally beneficial upgrade path with plug-n-play parts: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...unner-bbk-upgrade-for-2nd-gen-tacomas.504234/

When I got my 3rd gen I planned on doing a rear caliper swap almost immediately. After driving it I put it off and ~2yrs later I don't see the need. The drums are perfectly fine for me even when towing 5klbs, offroading, road tripping, etc.

 

I mean... towing that much youre usually required to have brakes on the trailer...

 

Good point, mostly used the U-Haul surge brakes when towing my car. Even so that's even more reason to not need a brake upgrade LOL.

 

Some people just can't leave well enough alone.

True…but one could argue that you can’t have too much braking power (assuming no wheel lockup).

 

But that's the thing. The stock 3rd gen brakes are already enough to lock the tires.

Bigger brakes are only good for repeated high-speed stopping, and this is a truck, not a sports car.

 

I don’t tow anything, but I suspect that if you have 5000 lbs rolling behind you, it’s harder to lock up the brakes (even if the trailer has its own brakes). I could be wrong.

 

It's actually easier to lock the front's while towing. Tongue weight moves the truck's effective CG way back, and the trailer reduces weight transfer to the truck's front wheels under braking.
