Debadging & tailgate wrapping

First, is removing the badge with a screwdriver as described below a safe procedure? Would it risk chipping the paint?

The best thing for removing an emblem is fishing line and a hair dryer... No screwdrivers.

 

i wouldnt try the screw driver...i used some fishing line and whatever adhesive is still left, remove with goo-gone

 

Yeah stay far away from the screwdriver. Chipping the paint is probably going to happen.

Pickup some fishing line, and use it in a saw like motion behind the badge. It's only held on with foam tape.

i used fishing line to remove my badges, i sprayed a little bug and tar remover on the badges 1st to act as a lube, worked great

 

Goo-gone is coming NO WHERE NEAR MY PAINT! You may think you wash it off, but that is some corrosive stuff. Look at how quickly it breaks down that annoying adhesive...

Just dental floss or fishing line (although I think dental floss is softer, no risk of weird scratching) and a hair dryer. Work that adhesive off with your fingers. Avoid chemicals as much as possible.

 

Would acetone harm the paint?

 

X2. Stay away from the screwdriver.

 

Acetone is the key ingredient in goof off/goo-gone. I would advise against it.

 

Goo Gone hasn't done anything to my paint..

 

x2 And I really rubbed it in to remove the adhesive. I found that using both goo gone and wd-40 one after the other works great.

I'm not saying it's going to take the paint off. It's just not a chemical you want hanging out on your paint. As long as you thoroughly clean it afterwards and wax it prior to putting on any new decals (if you're going to do what the first link in the OP does), I would imagine you'll be fine. Just giving my opinion and telling you I wouldn't do it.

 

i used bug and tar remover to get the left over adhesive off of mine....worked great. washed it and waxed the area afterward. didnt have any trouble. i also used the fishin line when the truck had been out in the sun for a while in the summer . didnt even need a hair dryer.

 

If you're going to go that route, why mess around. I say use a chisel...

The spot where my badges where looks exactly the same right now as the res of the truck...goo gone is good.

 

If it says on the side of it "safe for automotive paint" I will agree with you. Until then, I'll find other methods and recommend others do the same. Automotive paint, clear coat, wax are all a completely new game compared to household uses that most of these products are designed for.

 

Out of all the mods I've read on here for my 1 month old truck I didn't figure I'd need any help with this one. Wrong! Used a can off Goof-Off and my finger nail to remove the dealer badge....and a spot of clear coat....and paint. I'm still steaming over this as it just happened 10 minutes ago. So multiple lessons here. Read the forums for ANY and all mods no matter how simple they are and don't use acetone based solvents on your truck. Time to cover up my dumb move with a sticker or something...
