Why does my truck keep breaking down?

Over the last two years, I have had to rebuild my driveshaft twice. Now, I'm starting to notice the same symptoms and it's vibrating and tearing the carrier bearing apart. Drivelines should last a whole lot longer than this why is it failing so often?

Two years ago I rebuilt my transmission, now I'm getting crazy whines while accelerating (in gear). I changed the transmission fluid last week and the magnets were covered in metal and the fluid was dark and watery.

Why does everything keep failing? This leads me to believe there is something along the powertrain that is causing this because there is no reason to have huge problems like this so consistently. In one of my earlier threads, I posted a video of how bad my driveshaft was shaking and people were pointing out severe axle wrap. They suggested I take a look at my motor and transmission mounts. They are all certainly very worn out (don't know why they wouldn't have changed them during my engine and transmission replacement).

My question is: could these simple mounts be the cause for all of this constant breakdown? Could there possibly be something else causing this?

Here is a link to the video: https://youtu.be/cjAzRvJxdIw

The main objective in taking the video was to see the driveshaft vibration, although others were starting to point out things such as the excessive axle wrap and tons of movement in the exhaust, leading them to believe my motor/transmission mounts were bad (they definitely are).

If the mounts are worn out, replace them. Worn mounts will create slop in your drive train and speed up component wear.

I don't know if the mounts themselves could cause all these issues, but they're reasonably priced and easy to DIY, so I'd at least start with those.

It's generally quite hard, almost impossible to single out a culprit for something like this, and replacing possible culprits (in this case mounts) that are known to be entirely worn, until you can resolve the issue, is a wise idea.

Shifting to your transmission (pun intended), when you say you rebuilt it 2 years ago, do you mean you paid someone to rebuild it, or that you yourself did the rebuild?

Is your truck 100% stock suspension-wise? If not, have you adjusted your driveline angles so everything is happy?

I took it to a shop to get it rebuilt, not sure how great of a job they did and they certainly got generously compensated :annoyed:

NO, I have bilstein 5100s and 33' tires. Not sure it's much higher than stock though because of the amount of weight I have loaded on it.

Motor and/or transmission mounts need to be changed, or you will be dealing with the same problem again. The axle wrap is minimal and is a non-issue.

Pretty much stock for geo then as the Bilsteins should not provide any rear lift and the front won't affect those angles. Just wanted to rule out angles as that is the first thing that comes to mind when people break driveshafts.

Would look into swapping all of the motor and transmission mounts then like the others have said if they are old to limit the play in the drivetrain.

The amount of drivetrain movement is amazing. You can see the end if the tcase move forward and back about an an inch in your video at the :18 mark. That amount of movement is what is destroying your rear driveline. As for the cause of this movement, I'm guessing your motor mounts and trans mounts are totally destroyed.

Just replacing the mounts, you're gonna be in same boat again in a year or two...

    thats just a bandaid....

Same with having the drive shaft and carrier serviced.....they are gonna continue to fail....

just think what all that stress is doing to the tranny and diff internals....you're ripping em apart....
those are built to spin gears.....not hold up a bridge...
both of those are $1000's of $....

You just rebuilt the tranny 2 yrs ago......wonder how long until it eats it....

In this thread you fail to mention the 3 tons you're carrying around....

I would start another thread.....'Driveline issues with a heavy loaded truck'
    direct and to the point....

To find a solution(s), gonna have to find other heavy haulers and see what they did...
they all have fixes....like bracing the bed sides...ect....
these guys would give up their wives before .....well you know...

Define rebuild driveshaft. You can only do the carrier bearing... You need some stiffer springs or some anti-wrap solution. You also need all new mounts and throw that driveshaft away. If you're pulling heavy you'll need the transmission to be setup for that. HD clutches converter and a large cooler.

I had my driveshaft center flange replaced and the driveshaft rebalanced. It had a terrible vibration. Just FYI, it’s not just the carrier bearing that can get worked on.
