What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Strange, I don't see them on their website anymore.

Basically 2 feet of winch rope. One end you lasso around the CV by the diff, the other has a small loop you feed a BFH through. It's worked for me easily every time. You could make one out of old winch rope, but they used a smaller, maybe ATV, sized rope.

 

ah gotcha. Like a soft shackle but long with loops on both ends? Clever.

 

Yeah, I know the naming is a misleading, but the point I was trying to make was: All third-Gen 4Runners (open or locked) use the so-called 8" diff. Locked first-gen Tacomas use the 8" diff. As far as I know, a person could use a Tacoma 8" axle (from a locked truck) with a 4Runner 8" diff (from either an open or locked truck) in order to use a 4runner diff without having to do the fab work required to mate up a 4runner axle.

Is any of that worth the trouble? Depends on what parts are available in your area I guess. Around here, Tacoma axle housings are easy to find and 4Runner diffs seem to be slightly easier to come by than Tacoma diffs.

It's what Rory Irish (Trail Mater) uses. I found it after watching him do a Tacoma CV in one of his videos. It's one of my favorite tools now.

 

The one thing I like about using a pry bar is you can feel when the snap ring is in the right orientation to pop out easily. With that sling, do you just let er rip? I suppose that snap ring won’t do much damage to the internal splines.

 

Even with a pry bar I've only ever just let er rip. If anything you'll break the snap ring first and I've never even done that

 

I’ve been in a spot trying to pop out a Napa CV out of the passenger diff tube, no amount of prying, even with 2 bars on opposite sides pulling evenly and spinning the thing multiple times could get it out.

I made a tool, same idea as the lasso, piece of winch line (maybe cam buckle straps?) is a great idea in a pinch, and easy enough to make at home

 

Same. And never had issues with OEM CVs. Aftermarket ones can put up much more of a fight.

 

my passenger diff has a cv like this in there right now. Was going to replace a pinhole in the boot but I’m just sending it.

I did want to grab the grills tool as a back up/alternative

 

If your current pump is OEM, rebuild it. Aftermarket pumps are real hit and miss. You can rebuild the original pretty easy. This thread, https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/power-steering-pump-rebuild-how-to-with-photos.377002/ will show you how to do it.

If anyone has been on the fence over replacing your steering rack, that's not a terrible price for an OE Toyota rack.

 

Not bad. I paid 618 from mcgeorge back in Oct of 22 for mine when I last replaced it.

 

That is a pretty good price. I've seen Ourisman (formerly McGeorge) list them as low as $495.

Have you tried going to your local parts counter and having them order parts in and price match Ourisman or TPD?

I've been doing that the past 6 months or so to completely avoid shipping and they usually get within a couple dollars of Ourisman pricing. They took literally $200 off their normal list price for a charcoal canister a few months back (shows what a scam their normal pricing is).

 

My local Toyota Dealer is crooked as shit. Their prices are often 50-60% higher than McGeorge (Ourisman) and they wont match other prices. I normally go through McGeorge, but in this case, after tax and shipping ToyotaPartsDeal was actually cheaper.

I don't even consider the local dealer anymore.

That's a bummer that the local dealer won't play ball. In that case though I too would be going through TPD, Ourisman or Partsouq

 

Lame part is the rack isn't the spendy part is the damn OEM ITRE's that are. $300 of that is just the ITRE or something. Toyota wants over $100 a piece for those things.
