Toyota TRD OEM lift kit

Absolutely. pretty much a requirement

 

I was getting my 10K service and asked for a quote on the OEM TRD lift kit... This is what I got from my dealer:

The labor is 10.5 hours listed and should be more like 8.5 hrs or less for this install. They might claim they need more time to "calibrate" the safety stuff, but that is not accurate. Plenty of forum posts of members doing this exact same install and not having any issues with the safety sense.

Your quote, like many others, are overpriced. Good luck with whatever you want to do.

I just ordered the kit for around $1300 (after 20% off and tax) from a local dealer. I plan to install myself.

It may be overpriced, but my radar sensor is slightly unreliable (I think it got water in it), so a new one might be helpful. And with 130k miles, it's probably time for new shocks anyway. I'm also a fan of everything being Toyota validated.

 

Water in it ? how? replaced my grill almost right away so I don't know if this is characteristic of all Tacos but in heavy rain sometimes my TSS variable (whatever it is called) cruise control turns off. Is that a safety feature or a bug ? I don't know. But when I installed the new grill and remouted the TSS it is a solid unit no way water can get in the unit. Now maybe some water between the TSS and the plastic cover in front of it or on the back of the plastic cover facing the TSS but these are WAGs.

I think there's a TSB for water in the sensor (or maybe just between the sensor and the emblem?) To fix it they stick some sticky stuff on the back. That was never done on mine, and I'm not about to pay for it out of warranty.

On a recent trip the radar cruise was working on and off. It would just randomly stop working, saying something like pre collision system unavailable. Or occasionally the light would come on with no warning associated with it, which was a little weird. I had to revert to standard non-adaptive cruise control (long press the cruise on/off button), which I realized I actually prefer in some situations. The problem might have started after some light rain, but it continued even after days of hot dry weather.

In my other Toyota with TSS-P, adaptive cruise doesn't work in the rain, but it works again as soon as the rain stops. It doesn't fail gracefully either. It will be following the car in front of me, and then it starts raining and with no warning it accelerates because it thinks the car is gone. I know you're not supposed to use cruise control in the rain, but it should still be better about warning when it can't work. Maybe the new versions of TSS are better?

 

Yeah - basically that is mine - stops in the rain but not light rain but rain - sometimes it takes a few minutes or even longer like 10 minutes but it comes on again when the rain stops. And yeah I have had the no warning acceleration thing as well.

 

My dealer quoted 7 hours. 10 seems excessive.

 

I decided to pull the trigger on the OEM lift kit while my Tacoma was in for 30k service.

Toyota of Richardson (Dallas TX area) quoted $3,325.99 for parts and labor before tax for OEM lift with the grill and TSS. Seemed like a fair deal, and they were easy to work with. Other Toyota dealers in the area kept referring me to third parties which I found annoying.

Did 4 U-Bolts and both Spacers come with these part numbers or did you order 4 and 2 of each?

 

I'm part way through installing my kit. 3 out of 4 wheels done. The front was easier than I expected. I'm installing an archive garage U-bolt flip kit at the same time on the rear. There is extra length on their U bolts even with the spacer block, and in fact it looks like I'll need to trim some off.

Does anyone have a good way to lift the truck off the leaf springs in a home garage? I put a drop hitch in the receiver and put my floor jack under that, with the axle supported on jack stands. But it moves sideways a concerning amount when I lift it that way.

Edit: evening update: I finished the last wheel including trimming the U bolts. An angle grinder made a better cut for the ones I did off the truck, but a reciprocating saw made quick work of the ones on the truck with less mess. Drove it around the block and the wheels didn't fall off. I have an alignment scheduled for Friday. Then I need to work on the grille. Unfortunately the shop I was going to use to calibrate the radar sensor went out of business.

Edit 2: total time so far was about 9 hours, including a trip to rent a 150ft-lb torque wrench.

 

They're single units per part number.

 

I would think a calibration is not necessary. Lifted mine in 2018 and never an issue and does work correctly.

If you install the replacement radar sensor that comes in the TRD lift kit, it requires calibration. I'm getting an error about forward collision system malfunction (every 7 seconds, thanks Toyota), and cruise control no longer works at all. Even a long press for non adaptive cruise isn't working. I might try to DIY the calibration. It doesn't look too hard, except that I don't have a Windows laptop.

The old sensor probably would have worked, but the kit comes with a new sensor with a different part number, and the instructions specifically call out the new part number, so there must be a reason. I've read that it works for plenty of people with the old sensor and no calibration, but personally I want this system to work properly under all conditions not just most of the time. That is part of the reason for getting the TRD lift kit instead of any of the many (arguably better in some ways) aftermarket options.

 

They provide a replacement sensor with the new grill . . . . WOW - that is interesting. I bet if you used the old original one everything would work. Funny first I replaced my cheese grater grill with an x-trek grill and no TSS issues then I lifted my truck and again no TSS issues. So . . . . .

 

I got pretty close to the same quote in Texas. I found the kit at a Toyota dealer for about $1400, and a local shop quoted about $1200
