Gauging interest: 1" ball mount phone holder

I'm looking to see if anyone would be interested in a ball mount sized to fit in the grab handle. This is similar to the ram mount idea. This is 3d printed from PETG and uses a 75mm hex bolt. Single piece construction eliminates any guess work trying to use extra nuts and washers to space the Ram mount. I used a 1" to .75" ball adapter to make it work with my wireless charger pad.

Kit would include the ball mount, 1x 75mm (or 80mm depending on availability) hex bolt, 1x M6 flat washer, 1x M6 lock washer.
Swivel arm not included.

The color is a great match to the oem gray interior. I can also do black, red, and yellow.

Price would be $15 shipped in the US.

 

Great idea. Seriously I think this is very clever and a wise purchase for whoever is curious about this mod.

i definitely have some trial and error to do with the washers and nuts that are currently spacing my ball mount. The mount itself maybe does not have enough thread as it loosens gradually. Just annoying enough to keep living with.

Question: what size ball is this, or what is it equivalent to? Please correct me if I’m wrong but the A pillar ram mount thread is based off of the ‘size B’ ram ball. Does this matter when considering Ram or other accessories. I think that’s an important consideration for any potential buyer.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005J43I56) but experienced the same loosening that you had. Although, I started with a 3d printed spacer instead of the various nuts people used for spacers.

Initially, I thought it was an issue with the TPU material that's used. You can see it get deformed when the interior gets hot. I tried an all aluminum ball mount, but it also just became loose. Having the mount just swing back and forth irritated me. That's why I decided to make a 1 piece that you bolt in and is compressed with the bolt and lock washer.

The ball mount is a 1" ball like the ram mount.

Only concern is, handlebar is load bearing, I would suggest using ASA if you can. In addition it has a higher glass transition versus PETG.

 

PETG is nearly as strong as abs and the walls are solid with 30% sparse infill. I've been using it already and haven't had issues. My 3 piece swivel mount is at least 2 lbs because it's solid steel. If I was afraid it would break, I wouldn't use it or sell it.

 

Might be nice if it could eliminate most of that tinker toy Rube Goldberg setup.

I was going to joke about using a uniball but the more I think about it, the more I think it's a good idea. They won't wear out like the plastic ones. A 1/2" one from heimjoint.net is $12

 

That's just my own set up. Everyone has their own preferences, so that's why I'm not trying to include any arms. There are plenty of alternatives.

This, a selling point would be if you could eliminate all that stuff even if (or especially) only for your own mount. If YOU can’t get by without it, how is anyone else supposed to? Maybe it’s a “look” and I’m just old. Just my impression but to me it’s the start of a good idea that isn’t complete.

 

Until you actually have one, you won't understand. The adjustable arms are necessary because phones have different dimensions. If I designed a 1 piece to only fit my phone, I would be limited to sell to people with the same size. Some people have larger phones so the arm lengths would need to be adjusted. There are multiple factors when mounting a phone in that area. Even the wireless charger I have makes it unique because when it automatically closes, the bottom moves my phone up about .5". So if someone else's doesn't do that, the phone position may be too low for them. There are far too many factors to suggest a 1 size fits all solution. Thanks for your input.

You’re right of course. Your targeting those who already have the tinker toy setup while I’m part of the “less is more” crowd. I can’t even see my phone mount with the phone in place. FWIW I like what you are making, it’s the pieces between it and the phone that I find excessive.
