UPDATED WITH A FIX: Dome light and map light electrical help

I’m at a loss here. The other day I swapped out both my dome light and map lights from cheap white LEDs that I’ve had on the truck since almost new. I thought I’d like the look of blue, but didn’t, so I got new white LEDs to go in the map light spot, pulled the blue dome LEDs and the blue map LEDs.

When I went to do the swap, I blew the dome light fuse… no big deal. I swapped in a new fuse and now the lights won’t turn off. Even if I shut the doors and wait, or if I start the truck. Just for shits and giggles, I swapped them all back to the factory incandescent and the problem still persists. For now I just pulled the fuse so it won’t drain my battery.

Any advice??? What am I missing??

 

I need to look at wiring diagrams to see what to check but it sounds like you may have blown something in the Body ECU as it controls the ground to the interior lights.

Do you have a scan tool that can do all systems so you can check if the Body ECU has any codes in it?

 

I do have a scan tool but it sort of a cheap one. I’ll go hook it up and see if it gives me any codes.

Maybe try disconnecting battery and wait a few minutes then re-connect. Might correct with the re-set.

 

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that, twice, with no change in status though.

 

The "short" may have just confused the system. Some have disconnected the negative battery cable for 30 minutes to let electrical systems rest and un-confuse.

Once someone forgot to unplug their solar-supplemental during this and the system did not reset the first time.

 

No trouble codes coming back, but my scan tool is admittedly limited. Alright, I’m going to leave the negative battery terminal disconnected for longer. The first two times were like 5 and 10 minutes each.

You aren't the first to learn that you must disconnect the negative battery terminal any time you do electric work on these trucks - the electric system is seriously sensitive.

There have been lots of threads on this problem over the years, try the search function.

 

Check your interior light switch and make sure you don’t have it in the ON position instead of the Auto position.

 

So, letting it sit with the negative terminal of the battery disconnected for about 45 minutes did not produce a remedy.

I’ve got the dome light set to “door” and the upper console switch set to “door” and it still produces the same result. When I turn the upper console switch to “off”, both the dome and map lights go off. So, I have put the fuse back in and am just operating it in the off position for now and will kick it on manually when I need interior lights.

I. just hope I didn’t fry something and I want to get it back to operating normally. Thanks to all of the suggestions so far; this community is awesome!

After reading the first few posts on there, sounds like what I’ve got going on. Thanks for linking that here; i’ve got some reading to do.

 

UPDATE:

With a little side help from caribe makaira (he’s an electrical legend!) and the use of a spare overhead console I had in a box in the attic (robbed parts from it for another mod awhile back), I determined that something got fried in the circuitry in there and not my body control module. It’s too late to dive into it tonight, but I’ll swap out the parts tomorrow and with any luck, it should be back to normal. Thanks to all of the folks on here with diagnostic help, suggestions, and links to other threads.

 

That's good, much cheaper fix than replacing the Body ECU.

 

Yeah, no kidding. I wasn’t looking forward to forking out the $600 or so bucks and dropping it off at the dealer.
