I have a 2006 Gen2 Tacoma with 220K miles on it, Automatic, 4.0L V6. It's got a 6" lift and looks and runs great. I get compliments. Compression test a year ago was within spec.

I frigging love it, but it's not very fast and it's especially a dog going up the mountains in Colorado where I live.

    Options I can think of:
    1. Rebuild the existing engine and beef it up with a cam and/or other improvements
    2. Replace with a 4.7L V8 from a Tundra
    3. Replace with an LS
    4. Add a supercharger & headers

The goal here is moderate improvement with the least amount of cost and hassle. It doesn't have to be a beast, but I'd like a noticable improvement. I'd prefer to spend about 5-6K but would go as high as 10K. My skillset is moderate, I have changed or rebuilt three engines in my life.

    Hit me with ideas, please!

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
Regear the axles would be my first step because at the end of it all you're going to want/need to do it anyway with a 6" lift and the large tires that normally go with it.

I don't know about cost, but I think for least amount of hassle an intake, headers, exhaust, and a tune would be the way to go.

If that's not enough power I'd look at a built 4.7 with a supercharger. Then do an intake, headers, exhaust, and a tune for it.

If you want to get crazy, a turbo LS would be the way to go.

Whatever way you go, don't forget to regear. I'd do at least 4.88s. 5.29s if you want maximum chooch

If it's a 1GR, I'd go with option #4. That's easily the least amount of work, and you'll definitely get a nice boost out of it.

Edit: also, being lifted 6 in, I assume you are running larger tires as well. As mentioned above, a regear would also be beneficial.

SC, headers, straight pipes, larger air intake, 7th injector, re-gear, and a good tune (see @JustDSM ).

You'd be asking a lot out of those head gaskets if you went with a super charger.
    And on a 6" lift?

I think a regear would be a better option.

If you do the work yourself with a drop-in 3rd member. You might have enough to do the head gaskets and a SC. But that's a lot of money.

Regear is the least amount of hassle. If you have 33s run 488s , 35s run 529s and while there out might as well put Trutracs in the front and rear.

regear is almost as expensive as a motor swap to end up with a wrong ratio for a more powerful motor (or supercharged)

but yes OP take this guys advice who fails to differentiate between auto and manual

most people run 33’s stock gearing and my 4.88 is overgeared on 35’s, with 5.29 rarely done if ever on 2nd gen’s and weaker
    But take his advice

To achieve goals you are mentioning you'll spend close to what the truck is worth, assuming it's rust free, nice interior and good paint.

If that's ok with you, #1 would be to regear, #2 would be to drop the suspension lift stuff, #3 would be wheel / tire correction, assuming you have some jumbo stuff on there that is typical of a 6" lift

    Good luck!

Sell it and buy a Corvette

Just drive it and deal with it. It's a truck, not a sports car. The amount of money you're going to waste for even a slight improvement could be better spent elsewhere.

Yeah on second thought, forget all that about upgrading this truck --

    220K on the motor!

Now is not the time to start asking it to make ~25-35% more power.

Fuhgheddaboutit unless you plan to replace the existing motor completely.

Doubt you can do an LS swap for 5-6k? What ya think 456 for 33s 488 for 35s?

a used LS is probably like $1k.

likely easier plug and play any Toyota V8.

depends on the transmission. Manual is vastly different from auto.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Careful with the gearing and what you want. Correct what you have right now for the oversized tires. This will be huge alone. I have broken two third members that were 4.88 just because of how thin the teeth get. I wouldn’t even consider 5.29 but I am in an auto. S/C with a purpose built tune and corrected gear ratio would fit the bill just fine. I have a D60 with 4.88 now and 37s, no issue. I can also run 70-80 without any problems. An engine swap would blow that budget.

Alright I'm going to be That Guy.

How about just accepting that it's a very, very reliable truck in stock form that doesn't have a huge amount of power. Just keep it as-is and drive it to 500K miles.

Seek thrills elsewhere, maybe skydiving or dating TikTok influencers.
