I read on here the other day about 2016-2017 needing to have the transmission tuned?
I can't find it now. Is this something that the dealer does?
I don't have any issues but one of my sons says he feels like it is hunting when he accelerates.
(and yes, I did try to search for it but might not have the right search parameters as there were too many to check all of them.

The OTT tune vastly in proved transmission' eliminates gear hunting. Had it done on my 18.

I have the OTT tune, but there are other options out there. A tune will help a lot, as well as using S mode instead of D. Driving in town or staying under ~50mph? Leave it in S4. Highways at 50 - 70mph? Leave it in S5. 6th gear is just too low of RPM for this truck unless you regear.

Is this something the dealer does or outside mechanic?

You'll meet up locally with a tuner, so not Toyota. They will flash your ECU. Expect to pay $400~500

Is that all they do? Or is there more to it?

Even if you get the latest tsb from Toyota these trucks are natural gear hunters. Tune helps a lot.

All they do is flash the truck, which only takes a few minutes.

The tunes tinker with a lot of things, not just the shift points. It's a pretty good investment if how the truck is driving now is bothering you.

I gave this a try and was surprised at the difference. Thanks for the tip.

Also, if you havent done it, do a transmission drain and fill. my 17 drained a shade more than 2.5 quarts. followed the instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNqYpEpmUng
and it drives a lot better after.

I would do a drain and fill if there aren't too many miles on the odometer. Everyone's mileage threshold and comfort level is different, but the point is to avoid stirring up dirty fluid and damaging high mileage transmissions. Not everyone thinks the same, but I think cycling fresh fluid in extends the life of the transmission plus you have to be checking the level even on sealed units

As for driving better it may have been slightly low on fluid and filling it up added the extra fluid it needs.
