Today was the second time I've changed the oil in my '17 TRD Off Road with this problem. Normal practice is to remove the filler cap before removing the drain plug to relieve pressure. These past 2 times I've removed the plug, the oil comes out under extreme pressure like a power washer, getting oil everywhere. I've never had this problem before. Normally drains just fine. Any ideas?

Remove drain plug, let it drain a bit, then remove the oil fill cap.

There's no pressure in the crank case with the engine off. With the engine running there's a bit of vacuum but that's beside the point

Is the oil warm or hot? It'll come out faster if it's hot

There isn't anything wrong. Trying to capture oil coming out of the drain plug is just part of changing oil.
If you do this for a living you learn some tricks to keep from making a mess. Keep practicing

could be a clogged PCV, but still dont imagine a lot of pressure hanging around with what would get past the rings after a few mins

I agree, unless the crankcase ventilation system is not working.

OP ziptie a rubber glove over the oil fill spout and run the engine. If you have abnormal crank case pressure the glove will blow up like a balloon

But if you had that much pressure there would likely be some driveability symptoms.. or a CEL.. or rapid oil consumption between oil changes

Do you hear air rushing out when you remove the oil cap?

I highly doubt you have a problem

When I said it comes out fast, I mean it comes out like a full pressure garden hose and completely drained without any drips in under 20 seconds

    1. Warm your engine
    2. Let it sit a bit
    3. Open the oil filler cap
    4. Let it sit a bit
    5. Tighten the oil filler cap
    6. Remove the drain plug and let it drain (or better yet open the Fumoto valve)
    7. Open the oil filler cap

    That should do it.

At first you said “like a power washer” and then you said “like a full pressure garden hose”. Those are very different.

You could try just loosening the plug a little until it dribbles slowly, then gradually open more as it empty's.

0-W20 comes out pretty fast no matter what. It was a bit of a shock the first time I changed it, but at least it comes straight down in a Tacoma, not at an angle in our Forester, where it's really hard to judge just how far to offset the drain pan.

It used to be an annoying mess for me until I used this splash pad. In my 25 plus years of doing my own oil changes the Tacoma drains out faster and makes a bigger mess than anything else.

Just so we are all on the same page, check out 2:55 in to this video and let us know if your oil drains faster, slower or about the same as in this video.

I just hold a scotch-brite scour pad in the oil stream and don’t splash a drop.

It drains out of the pan quite fast, but it is not under pressure. If you want to see a bigger mess, drain over 7 quarts of oil out of the 5.7L Tundra's engine. In this case the drain bolt is located at the bottom's edge of the pan pointed to the side, so the oil will flow in that direction. Then when some of the oil has drained, the direction changes toward the ground. It means that you better keep an eye on the oil and move the drain pan accordingly. practice makes perfect :)

I'll raise you Ford trucks with plastic oil pans and 1/4 turn plugs, most notably this F150. One of the worst designs ever, it's in just the right spot that the oil hits the sway bar and makes a nice shower.

If you think this truck is bad try working on a Subaru. Huge drain plug, ALL the oil comes out in about 5 seconds
