Brake Upgrade with Tundra or 4Runner Calipers & Rotors?

On this thread it talks about upgrading brakes with a 4 runner caliper 14WA instead of a 13WL caliper like the description on Adventure Tacos website.
Anyone know which of these calipers is bigger and does the 4 runner rotor bigger than the Tundra rotor ?
As it is from what Ive read a Tundra 13WL caliper may not fit if you have a 16 in wheel but then read several that have a 1st Gen Taco and 16 in wheel and they claim it fit just fine.
Has anyone done this upgrade recently and can provide more information its getting somewhat confusing.

The 4Runner rotor is larger, 338, while the older Tundra's is smaller, 231. The 4Runner Calipers have a slightly larger piston size than the Tacoma. It comes down to what wheels you have. Some of the 4Runner wheels need spacers on the Tacoma for these to fit, but most aftermarket wheels work. The Tundra setup was a bigger add on the 1st gen Tacomas than I feel on the 2nd gen Tacoma since you can beef up rotors and pads and get improved performance. The 4runner setup rotor size is similar to the BBK kits out there, which range from 338 to 345ish, with a few sets in smaller 323mm to fit 16" wheels.

 

13WL is the same size as your stock 13WG caliper. Only difference appears to be the angle of the flare nut port. i.e. You'd just create a fitment issue without any gain in braking power.

Adventure Taco runs a 1st gen Taco.

 

So if i used 4Runner parts would i be changing to a 323 4 Runnner rotor and then what calipers would i use just don't add new calipers ?

I have 16 in wheels.

 

Isn’t the 1st gen Tundra rotor the same as 2G and 3G Tacoma, aka 319mm? 231 would be a pretty tiny rotor.

as for wheel fitment, I want to say the Tacoma
Wheels will fit fine on the 28mm wide rotor from 03-09, but not the 32mm wide from 2010+. Granted they have to be 17” at a minimum to clear the larger setup.

I’ve seen people put Tacoma wheels on 4Runners and it doesn’t work without a spacer on the 2010+ for sure, since the designs of the wheel spokes don’t clear the larger (wider) caliper.

But 4Runner calipers really are not that much bigger than 2 Gen Taco right ?

So what is the real benefits just a larger diameter 4 Runner rotors ?

Cant you put a Tundra brake master cylinder on a 2 Gen Taco, I thought found someone did that but they had to weld a nut on to make the push rod the correct length.

 

^The 4Runner caliper's pistons are bigger so there's more clamping force. However, this results in more pedal travel. (4Runner's pedal feel is shit compared to the Tacoma.)

 

The upgrade is the leverage from the larger rotor (and corresponding caliper being mounted further out), as well as the larger caliper pistons having a bit stronger clamping force.

 

Interesting. I like a softer pedal personally. I never liked how hard the stock Tacoma OR pedal feels. I was thinking the 4R brakes would be a nice swap. Although I keep insisting on these damn 16” OR wheels, so not really in the cards for me anyways.

 

^I went to 17" wheels because skinny 35" tires aren't available for 16" wheels. I would argue you don't need a brake upgrade if running 33" or smaller tires.

 

Oh I definitely don’t need it. Just thought it might be a nice change to how it feels. I just don’t like the hard pedal. But with me keeping the 16’s it’s unlikely I’ll ever do anything anyways. I do have a set of Sport wheels that I like a lot and think they’d fit the 03-09 (13WH) brakes, but I probably will end up selling those before I ever tried anyways.

 

Im not running monster truck tires in fact they are 265 mm the stock size. Im just trying to figure out what brake upgrade exists keep finding videos but all this BS is for first gens apprently.
Then i heard someone on another forum say Lexus has brakes you can put on 2nd Gen Taco, never heard this until now.
231 mm someone was saying was the size of the caliper but no idea how they measure to get that number i thought 231 was rotor diameter.
This is very confusing and the write ups I was directed to dont really point out that the modification is not for a 2nd Gen.
Which begs the question if you have 16 in wheels are you just SOL as far as brake upgrades?
Are there even after market big brake kits for 16 in wheels?

2016-2023 Tacoma brakes are the same. 319mm x 28mm rotor. 45mm piston calipers.

Options for upgrade IF you go to a 17” diameter wheel. 16” wheels will not accommodate the larger rotors/calipers):

2003-2009 4Runner and GX470 are an option you can upgrade to (13WH). 338mm x 28mm rotor. 45mm piston calipers.

2010-2024 4R are another option you can upgrade to (14WA/B). 338mm x 32mm rotor. 48mm piston calipers.

The downside to the 14WA/B stuff is the wider rotor and caliper to match end up causing problems on the stock Tacoma wheels. Stock Tacoma 17” wheels are typically 7.5” wide with +30mm offset. 4R wheels are 17x7.5 as well but +15mm offset. Part of it could also be the spoke design of the wheel, but 03-09 4R had similar wheels to Tacomas, so I imagine with the narrower 28mm rotors, any Tacoma wheels 17”+ would work. That would need confirmation though.

If you were to get some 17” stock wheels, it would probably work on the 03-09 WH stuff.

1st gen tundra should have the same as what you already have, so no need to bark up that tree. 2nd gen tundra is 5 lug and much larger, requires 18” wheels at minimum and is meant for stopping a big boy Tundra. No need to look into that one either.


TLDR, you need larger than 16” wheels to do anything. If you’re keeping 16’s then pretty much leave it alone because there isn’t room for more.

 

for 16" BBK kits SOS and the old TRD (basically the same as SOS as they were stoptech calipers).

I pulled 231 from the page the OP referenced for Adventure Taco and never seen it referenced for a caliper. Didnt think much of it. those rotors are 319mm not 231mm.

One downside of the 4Runner kit and larger piston is that it requires more fluid. You will get some softness in the pedal, but get a really good bleed, and you're good to go. If you run a sport or SR5 a common compliment upgrade is the tundra master and boster. I have an OR so it has the electronic master and ran that setup for a few years. You then have the option of adding a Wilwood caliper from RR Racing (who makes a 4runner/GX upgrade). I moved to Stoptech brakes F/R a couple of years ago.

I was at SEMA this year checking out the Wilwood booth, and the new Direct Mount Aero6 Tacoma kit looked really nice. Unsure if anyone is running that yet but I loved those calipers. I only swapped to Stoptech as I wanted pistons sized for a Tacoma in an effort to find better braking.

 

14WA calipers and matching rotors fit stock 17" +30mm Tacoma wheels. Running them on my 5th gen 4Runner to clear 33" skinnies on stock suspension:

 

Nice, maybe it was jus the 17 runner wheels that wont work on the Tacoma. Those need spacers on Tacomas.

 

What is TLDR im not new to automotive but i dont know all you alls toyota abbrevs. WH is you mean wheel hub on a 03-09 what ? 03-09 4 Runner ??

 

TLDR is a summary (too long didn’t read).

13WH is a designation for the brake caliper. Tacomas have 13WG brakes. 03-09 4Runner have the same 13WG brakes standard and then optional 13WH which are larger but still 28mm wide rotor. The 2010+ 4Runner introduced standard brakes that were similar to 13WH but they were now called 14WA and were wider (32mm width rotor). They were the same diameter as the 13WH rotors from 03-09.
