I do agree. The NV4500 behind my Cummins spun the 5th gear nut off.... Id still take that any day of the week over a 48RE, etc.
Im going at auto transmissions in general. That being said, the NAG1(Mercedes transmission) behind the Hemi in the Charger, was by far, my favorite Auto. and if I could find a low mile in that platform, Id pounce.
And, I am under no delusions.
From a mechanical standpoint, Id rather VWs DSG behind a TDI. And even that comes with problems.
Am am not, nor have I been anti progress. Been a fan of fuel injection, and ABS since the 90s. Before we were even where we are now. the 700R4 could be made to be reliable, hold up to a bit of power/abuse, and even hold OD beyond 1/3 throttle.
Autos that hunt(Tacoma 6spd), WILL have shortened life. What does that mean overall? No idea. Is it something that annoys the sh*t out of me? Yep. Most other people dont even register it.
As said from moment one. Its a ME problem. I cannot see CVTs providing consistent long life, just due to how they operate. Maybe for a highway mile crusher? Could I be wrong? ABSOLUTELY.
Am I aware that this is my OPINION? Of course. I am also willing to change my opinion with experience, evidence, etc, as needed.
But, I am not willing to put one in my driveway at this time.
Couple that, with as mentioned, Toyota dropped the V6 from the camry, and its just the 4cyl.
Kinda eyeballing an Acura TLX, and Lexus ES or, if we could find one, a used TRD Camry.
Kinda like the Ecoboost F150s. I wont buy one, even knowing MANY owners never had a problem with them, becuase we had a fleet of transits with that powerplant(3.5, not 2.7), and only 1 or 2 made it to, let alone past 100k. Most of them spent more time in the shop, than on the road.
As far as the new Tacoma, Id be for it, if A), it wasnt stupid expensive, and B), maybe a couple model years in.
In reality, it is really irrelevant. Im one person, and my concerns and opinions mean squat in the big picture.
I wont scream anything from the rooftops.... Im only concerned with my money. Or, in the case of my customers money(and my headaches).

All that said, Im not currently a fan a CVTs, and dont see that changing anytime soon. Not saying it wont, or cant change, just that I know where my bias is, and I dont see it changing. Everything is a compromise.

Seems like most CVTs regardless of manufacturers only seem to last 70-100k miles

Not really. Prius's have been using CVT's forever without many problems. Subies however...

Camry just rolled 150k and the CVT hasn't skipped a beat. Other than when I drive it and am on an on ramp, thing never sees torture.

I would never trust one towing. Or in the woods. Or on something better than a crossover. But the Toyota one with the "real" first gear (if i remember correctly, and I think Honda does that too), on a hybrid econobox - sign me up.

I'd prefer a "traditional" AT but it is what it is. I wouldn't grenade a purchase over it.

    Nissan, on the other hand.....

CVTs are like German cars vs Japanese cars. A German car following the PM schedule because the Germans like a rule, will treat you well. They don't handle neglect. Japanese cars are designed to expect neglect.

The CVTs can't handle neglect. If you take care of it, it won't bite you in the ass.

Again - not towing, or under a heavy load. Unless you count the dometic in the trunk with 4 boxes of wine as a heavy load. :)

Fair enough. I know subies, Nissan, and I'm pretty sure even corollas have cvt problems all around 100k. But yes proper maintenance ahead of manufacturers suggested current BS numbers can and will prevent a lot of problems

My uncle buys Rogues like it's a religion. I think he's on his 4th. I'm not at all impressed with them - it just feels like most competitors are significantly nicer for barely any more money. His own son (former Nissan tech) told him not to keep them too high in miles because of the CVT, so he gets another gently used one every few years.

I had an oil change done at a local non dealer shop. I've used them for the Tacoma for almost a year. Reasonable prices, good service, work is fine. Anyway, the service writer told me that they found a leak at the left axle bearing. At first I was baffled, but then I remembered that there had been issues with that after my early 2023 crash. The insurance company had approved a new left axle because of a phantom vibration when I went over 40.

Strange that about 20 months later that side is leaking. Hopefully it is just the bearing and nothing more serious like damage to the axle housing. I'm going to schedule the work, but I think I'll not mention the accident to see what they say when they get everything apart.

That accident is the gift that keeps on giving.

Dumb question time. Keep in mind that it's been decades since I had to pull an axle from a rear differential. As I recall back when I did the last one (1972 Corrola) I had to pull the rear brake shows as well. Is that still the case or has the design changed from the 1940s? ;)

After the above mentioned oil change I got another three months free on Sirius XM. The last time that happened was before we moved, so it has to have been in early 2023. My guess is that because the shop puts information into CarFax, that somehow triggered something on the SiriusXM server to send me the free subscription. Comparing it to Pandora, the music selection is pretty much the same, Pandora has no DJ's, and I can repeat or skip on Pandora. If I activate the SiriusXM app, the content is more Pandora like, so there's no reason to pay SiriusXM. I'll use it until it expires or until the music selection bores me enough. ;)

This is true, though as you said dealing with a brand in general that's proven more reliable than not. I myself wouldn't go buy a 24 right now but that's the "no first year, wait and see" in me plus that I'm not in need fortunately, hopefully for a long time. I think you're right too about the access to information now being a builder of mountains.

Should be interesting re the turbo. I remember how few vehicles other than Mercedes turbo diesel that the average bear might own had them when I was younger, and the constant fear of them. I remember telling a friend long ago that once they're tried and tested so to say they'll be common. He laughed. How's that working out for him now?

For the most part yes since you'll need to disconnect the ebrake cable. You don't have to do a full disassembly though.

Pull the wheel, drum, shoes for the ebrake cable, and take the line out of the wheel cylinder, then undo the 4 nuts on the back side and it will come out

Thanks. I'm more curious than anything else because I'm not going to tackle that job by myself. I don't have a Jack or jack stands or probably the patience to do it. I actually do have the tools. Except for whatever I would need to press the new bearing on. When my daughter had a 2004 runner with a similar problem the shop that replaced it had to send the axle out to have the bearing placed on because it required a special Toyota tool. I don't know if that's still the case or if it was ever the case with the tacoma.

Also, when that accident happened I got a remanufactured wheel out of the deal and then a new axle. But I didn't get a new tire for some reason and that tire was always very hard to balance. I'm guessing and it's just a guess that the vibration from that is what caused the bearing to go bad. I've replaced all four tires since that just due to normal wear and don't have that vibration problem any longer so hopefully this will be the last I'll see of this problem.

I'd assume it's the same situation. For mine we tig welded about a 2 inch long strip on the retaining ring and flipped it over and tapped the axle shaft on some wood, came right off from the thermal expansion. Then the vearing comes off the same way. Easier to press everything back on if the table on the press goes high enough to fit the shaft length

hey, just wanted to introduce myself. i live in SE MA, actually 10 mins from freetown state forest, copicut rd and quanapaug and surrounding unmaintinaed rds, legal wheeling. it is mostly deep mudholes though, 1 decent hill, haunted forest roads. we camp in epsom NH and i plan on doing mountain road next time we go up there, about 2 hrs north (i want to start doing NH class 6, in southern NH) i used to envy all the westcoasters 4x4 scene but realized they often travel hours for their trips, i can do the same to NH in 2-3 hrs...

used to have a modified 4th gen 4 for 7.5 years and just had a 2015 tacoma trd offroad with 87k miles shipped up, AZ titled previously, clean

here is my old and new truck: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hinmo24t-build-2015-trd-or-blue-ribbon-metallic.847850/
and hope to get in on some events or trail rides in the future, as i am kind of getting away from harley
scene (selling it all right now) and back into camping/wheeling/exploring with a growing family. im going to lift/wheels and some armor again, but not until my bike sells. ill run this thing as is for a year or two, 90% fresh wildpeaks came on it...

just did my rear diff fluid, breather, tcase fluid (awesome, did valv conv 75w90) and doing front when my lexus drain plug shows up from international ebay seller lol
maybe a drain and fill on transmission at dealer eventually, or not

Funny, I have had XM for probably a decade and just recently cancelled because I got sick of playing the price game every year. They always default to over $20/month which is nuts given my streaming video services aren't even that high. A friend got a $99 for 3 year offer and that would be enough for me to continue it, so I told them that. They wouldn't do it. Maybe they will offer that when the subscription actually ends in a couple weeks.

I do like it because I don't have to think about what to play like I would with streaming music - just have a bunch of easy to use presets. FM isn't great here. Springfield has some good stations but they are too far away. EQX I can get at home or in Southern Vermont, but if I start going further south into MA I lose it. Albany is most of what we get and they just aren't good.
