Just how much better are real Bilstein 4600/5100s

Since 4600’s and 5100’s are basically the same shock except the 5100 is for lifted trucks, be curious to know what the advantages would be for the OP to get 5100’s instead of 4600’s. And why would the OP want to pay more for for 5100’s when the 4600 costs less?

 

I put 5100s on my truck to help combat the "Taco-lean." One setting higher on the left than the right.

 

Dude, see my above post, the internals are the same, both are steel not aluminum. The outside of the 5100 is zink coated over steel, not aluminum . The difference is one is for lifted trucks. You gain nothing getting 5100’s for a stock truck. I definitely agree U do u

Apparently I ordered the 4wd set instead of the rwd. What is the difference and can I still put them on?

 

The shocks are the same no matter what. There may be a difference in the coil though. I would get with the outfit you purchased through and ask them.

 

Ok so I swapped them and there is definitely a noticeable difference. Way less harsh on potholes/small bumps/sewers. I would feel everything on the 3rd gen takeoffs but now I can't feel the little bumps at all. And my dash had some harsh creeking on even little bumps before but now everything seems dampened and right.

I think the 3rd gen takeoff route is just a waste of money and coil/weight difference between generations is actually a big deal. Thanks fellas

 

I'll prob switch out the rears one day but they seem fine for now

 

Oh man if you like the ride with just the fronts I highly suggest you do the rears as well. Glad you like them, I know I sure do. For what I do with my truck they are perfect.

 

Ahh I wish I just did them both but didn’t know how much of a difference it was gonna be. I’ll do it soon but it’s ok for now

Planing to replace stock Shocks and Struts.
Main idea improve ride with payload.

That suspension from 2016-2023 (3rd gen) TRD Tacoma interchangeable with 2005-2015 (2nd gen) Tacoma
Original plan was to buy used stock TRD Shocks and Struts from 3rd Gen and install on 2 gen. But later discover about Bilstein 4600 that much more bigger than stock TRD.

So my main question which springs and 4600s better to use? Stock for 3rd Gen, on keep it for 2 Gen?

How I understand benefits of using front springs from 3rd gen, they have higher payload vs 2nd gen.

Can I use 24-265973 instead 24-186056???

Just ordered a replacement set from Suspensionlifts and they are on sale with free shipping!

 

Use the stock springs for 2nd gen if they're in good condition. 3rd gen springs account for more weight in the front so they'll be very stiff and won't take bumps lightly. You'll hear a harsh creak on the dash on every pothole.

I did it because I just wanted all Toyota stock parts but didn't take in account the weight difference.

 

Agreed with above about using the 2nd gen springs. That being said, I would get the 4600 for sure (or 5100 if you want ride height adjustable). The stock 3rd gen take offs were pretty pogo stick like in my opinion and don’t provide much damping. I’d save and get the real deal.

 

Just had 5100s (TRDs) installed on my Sport last week...the ride is leaps/bounds over the Hitachi Shocks they replaced.
