Heads up, I live in Denver and had to get an emissions test. I failed. I was given a number to call for a State test. The nice lady on the phone asked if I had a tune on my truck, which I do. She told me that is the reason why my Onboard Diagnostics didn't pass. Apparently this is a newer issue in Colorado. They don't allow tunes.

Find a friend or relative that doesn't live along the Front Range and doesn't require emissions and register the truck at that address. No more emissions, keep your tune.
    This state sucks.

Good to know. Is a tune reversible?

So the person that updated my truck gave me two options, remove the tune or get a new version of the tune, which was quite expensive, that allegedly passes emissions. While I am not excited about it, I chose to remove the tune to make sure I pass. The other tune was quite a bit more than I wanted to pay, especially considering I paid a fair amount for the previous tune.

Which tune did you have? I remember seeing a long thread on this in the past from another CO going through this. I think one of the options was to own another ECU to swap for the emission testing, but I thought there was another option in the thread too.

I toured CO last summer/fall. It was quite scenic once you get out of the major cities, but I noticed a lot of the same problems that CA has. Seems like it would have been a really cool place 20-30 years ago. I liked Idaho so much better, but Idaho doesn't really have a robust economy or strong job market. I left CA a couple decades ago for AZ. CA is a hot mess. Every state has "it" in some form or another.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
There was a thread on this about 2 years back already. The tune changes the checksum on the flash in the ECU, which is why the truck fails. You either have to get the ECU flashed back to the stock tune, with the correct checksum, or get the tune that's CA certified. I guess you could buy a junkyard ECU to swap out for testing.

I had a tune from Blaze offroad. He is not in the area so I was referred to Ryan at Colorado Toyota Tuning.

    FYI, https://legalclarity.org/colorado-used-car-sales-laws-and-buyer-protections/

...For dealer sales, the seller is responsible for providing a valid emissions test certificate at the time of sale. Private sellers, on the other hand, must ensure the vehicle passes the emissions test within 12 months prior to the sale. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in penalties, including fines and the potential invalidation of the sale....

So you should press the issue with whoever you bought it from. They are responsible to correct this.

I bought it 9 years ago from Mountain States Toyota. I don't think they can be held liable.

You couldn't get a tune for any Tacoma in 2016. Blaze has only been open since 2020.
