Steering rack needs to be replaced after 50K miles - 2019 Tacoma

im going to give this a go! I was quotes 2700 to replace. Only have 59k miles on it.

 

Yup. 71k mis. Have to replace 1 side. $1600.00 plus alignment.
No off-road, no hard turns, no aggressive driving.
This comes after engine blew up. Just installed a used one with 61k mis on it.
Shortly after, TPMS went out, rack and pinion went out, AC went out. I will never own another Toyota product.
$16,000.00 and counting..

I have the Mazda fluid, and in a few days, I will be swapping the stock Toyota steering fluid in my 2019 Sport (50k), and changing the oil, filter, adding the summer wheels, and doing the ECGS bushing update. Do you just remove and replace the fluid in the PS reservoir? Or is it more involved? Mine has been a little below the low mark, so I ordered the Mazda fluid.

I also ordered the new serpentine belt from the TSB info you posted to hopefully get rid of an intermittent belt noise. I just hit 40k miles, which seems to be when the old belt part number starts to have issues.

I used a turkey baster to suck up everything that was in the reservoir, then I refilled it, ran it through a few turns to mix up the fluid, then sucked up the fluid again with turkey baster. I kept doing this until the fluid was the same color as what was coming out of the bottle new.

 

When I first found the mildly moist rack boots, my level was just down a little bit. A fuzz below the low mark when cold. Topping up from there solved the issue. It was not much fluid at all, which was part of my surprise.

I just had to add a bit more at 110k, but the boots are still dry. I have not cycled out the fluid, and thankfully that is not called out in the manual. We have had a few cars that did require it.


I replaced the belt not too long ago, but cannot find the part number that I used. I forgot about that thread. Haha! I'm after that VIN range which seems strange considering you have a 2019.

My rack boots are dry, but I was just below the cold low. I sucked out the contents of the reservoir and filled it up to halfway between the cold low and cold high. I'll check it again next oil change. Maybe it's always been a little low?

 

Always good to have dry boots. Hahaha!

After a few weeks I didn’t see mine drop any. I did end trading my truck in for a gen 4 a few days ago though. The trade in value on the gen three is through the roof.

 

I noticed my PS fluid was low early on and topped it off by 15k-ish miles. I regularly check the fluid and now at 43k have not lost anything. Crawling under the truck the last few times I noticed the bottom half of the boots have darkened. I'm guessing this happened a long time ago and they will just stay that way. Since I haven't lost any fluid in 30k miles I don't think anything is getting worse.

 

Sorry, but my boots dried out.

At least it is not a critical worry.

 

Man my 2019 with 53K has the same thing, seaping fluid from the drivers side boot. My dads 2018 also. His has 98k on it tho but still weird yet common problem on these 3rd gens it seems.

 

I had mine go out on my 2017 within a few months of buying it new off the lot. Luckily it was under warranty, so no out of pocket expense.
I have almost 160k miles on it now and no problems since then.
I did have to replace it on my old ‘99 when it was around the 200k mark.
