Bumping this from the dead. Any progress? Any way I can get my hands on this or contribute in some way? Is ovtune still around?

    Could be wrong here...but uhhhh

    This ain't comin back

I was super hopeful when it was first posted, but quite frankly the tech in the majority of 3.4 ECU's is simply too old and unknown theses days to make tunable, atleast to a degree anyone would invest time in.

You would be better off investing in a haltech ECU. There are Plug and Play kits out there now and quite a large community of support. On top of that most major tuners know how to tune haltech ecus

Not only that, but I have multiple 03-04 ECUs (a mix of Japan made and TN made) and OV said not a single one is tunable. So it seems only very specific ones can be done, if any at all. The whole thing was confusing.

BTW I’m fairly certain OV is no more and the new company is under VFtuner.

also, Split Second, the company that actually made all the piggyback computers for URD is no longer operating so, not sure what URD is going to do but maybe there’s a silver lining? Either Gadget is going to work out rights to continue manufacturing the old SplitSec stuff, he’ll use his contacts to come up with something hopefully better, or just stop producing the 7th kit all together.

It might get interesting because if Gadget can’t continue with the same Tech then Magnuson spent all that TVS1320 R&D and CARB approval cash for a dead application. Magnuson says you don’t need tuning but thats legal verbiage to protect them legally. They know damn well you need to alter timing/fueling so while they’d probably never get officially involved they would probably provide at least direction to their vendor in coming up with a solution.

The split second stuff was pretty outdated back in 2010 even, I'm amazed they made it this long

Im not disputing that, what I’m saying is that if that goes away you wind up with the only solution, a $4000+ ECU. That brings the total investment much higher than it previously was and URD likely won’t have a solution because they historically have not offered standalone ECUs

Im just interested to see what URD is going to do.

Can do a Haltech for a good bit less than $4000 and it'll actually work. Those split second units were so hamstrung by the stock ECU, even if they were cheap as dirt, they never really worked well. The SS units weren't the only piggy's on the market though

I’ve built a cart on SNP. $3579 for 03-04 w Auto trans. Still would need to get injectors/pump etc. I’d need to rely on remote tuning too as the closest tuner is hours away so there’s cost in that. Can you link to a cheaper option?

I’m calculating the SNP kit, injectors, pump, and 8.5% sales tax to get $4K

    There's your prob haha

What features do you want. I can likely find everything you need cheaper and as far as tuning goes I've got a hookup there for you :)

I’m always interested in options and future value so I can take it with me for future applications. Ideally trans control, electronic TB control, etc. I’ve always leaned toward the 2500 for that reason. IMO Trans control is important. I can drive around the knock but simply driving around shift points.

But most importantly, a complete wiring harness. I really need to be able to plug and play.

I'll PM you this afternoon when I've got a computer in front of me. But I can tell you now that none of the harnesses on the market currently do all of that even if the computer supports it. I don't think anyone has done the R&D directly on it. But its something I've been working on. Done trans control, DBW (the Toyota one is a nightmare control wise)... But also no one should be buying 2500s anymore, it's about $200 more at the dealer pricing level to get an S3 which has more features and a built in wideband module so really it saves you about $150 over a similarly featured 2500.

Zane and Jayson can definitely help you get to where you want to be. With the exception of the electronic tb, my setup is the same as what you have. Full trans control is amazing. And with a Jayson tune, 240 hp at the wheels is easily attainable.

Don't give your money to Gabe.

I appreciate everyone's response. Without a doubt standalone offers many many advantages, and I've built and tuned a handful - haltech, MS, motec to name a few. I would much preferto go standalone. I also see a few new "parallel" systems, ie true injector /ignition controllers as opposed to 'piggyback' systems. My reason for wanting to get into the factory dme is to try and make some changes, find the limitations, and maintain obd2 and emissions compliance for inspection purposes. Despite approaching classic territory it seems my state will retain emissions inspections on any obd2 vehicles, and that is unfortunate as I have been considering a turbo system for a while.

Has anyone played around with the rusefi system?

I am currently running rusEFI's uaEFI in parallel with my stock ECU for my turbo 5vz, and so far I really like it. Complete control over fueling and ignition, and let the stock ECU handle the rest. Next step for me now is I need to grab larger injectors.
