Tacoma year to buy 2018 vs 2020 vs 2022

All 3 have 60k miles and are TRD Sport. 2018 is leather with moonroof. Just wanted to know what year I should buy?

 

How's the frames look? Rust? Favorite color? 2022?

 

Not sure about US specs, but my 2022 came with a better sound system, acoustic glass, and more safety features. (Compared to my 2018)

 

they all look good. 2018 is black with 66k miles for 29K. 2020 is gray with 64k miles for 31K. 2022 is white with 63k miles for 31k. just looking at what year would run the longest

 

2022 is TRD off road not sport

 

2020+ had led headlights as a factory option. Highly recommend those over halogen. Potential issues with white paint,

I think Tacos until 2020 were made in Texas if you are into Merica thing.

Usually later year is better since it has updated parts and less years on it but look at frame and maintenance history.

Leather seats sound sweet with moonroof.

 

Nope, my 2017 was made in Mexico. No issues after 9 years and 72k miles.

 

The 2022 OR trim will hold its value better than the sports. It'll ride plusher on road too. 2020+ years got a front grille redesign, Apple CarPlay, power driver seat, optional led headlights and fog lights, software updates/improvements for the auto transmission.

2016's had the rear diff recall. 2017's are generally reliable. 2018/2019 were oddball years. 2018 was the first year for Toyota's safety sense as standard equipment. I believe there was a fuel pump recall around that time.

Out of those 3, I would lean towards the 2020 because if the white paint on the 2022. 2019 and earlier are the most problematic trucks…that is not to say they are problematic or risky, but they definitely have issues popping up more frequently and at this point, I don’t think it’s just age/miles. The 2020 and 2022 are pretty close in desirability, the 2022 is arguably more desirable, but it brings with it the risk of white paint issues. So for me personally, I’m choosing the 2020 out of those options.

Neither of them have the factory LED headlight option, so that is a moot point for this discussion.

 

Less is more if you ask me, I sourced my 2017 SR5 Access Cab 3.5L V6 because it has just enough standard tech for me. No auto start (physical key) No auto headlights, No auto wipers, No auto lane-keep cruise control, No TSS front nor rear. It came with Bluetooth and manual climate controls along with manual cruise control and I couldn't be happier with it. It's had all the recall/TSB items performed at the local dealer, and I lucked out finding a one owner, local, with impeccable maintenance records with only 41k miles on it. I've had it coated with fluid film, added some things here and there and plan on keeping this bad boy Forever. I love and am extremely happy with my SR5. Good luck OP!

Conditions being equal ….OR for me. Rear locker and mts/crawl ctrl are not meaningless features on a tacoma 4x4 truck.

 

I received the notice from corporate last week regarding my perfectly awesome white paint. Go with the 2020.

 

Tacomas has always been made in Mexico for a while. They produced some 2nd and 3rd gens at Baja California ever since the middle of the 2nd gen production run

Toyota moved San Antonio Tacoma production to Guanajuato, Mexico during 2021.

 

Toyota doesn't make paint, or tires. They buy paint and tires from the same manufacturers as every other car company. The white paint isn't just a Toyota problem and it's not a recent problem. My white 2007 is peeling paint as is almost every white vehicle made in the last 20 years from all manufacturers. They all buy their paint from the same places.

Other than that there isn't enough difference between those model years to matter much. You have to decide which one you like best and at a price you're willing to pay. But all things being equal I'd generally go with the newer one.

 

Yeah, our white 2015 Acura RDX has peel issue with the hood, maybe some other places too (mostly concealed).

edit: our two white 22 Tacomas don’t have peel issues. Knocking on wood

 

No peeling on my white ‘16 taco nor ‘04 white S2000. Both factory original paint. Not all white flakes.

RE: Sunroof - You lose a bit of headroom which is in short supply in a Tacoma depending on your build and preferred seating position.

Make sure this isn't going to be a head banger for you, unless you happen to be like the entire interior design team for this truck, apparently they were all under 5'6".
