2LM PnP - Plug and play 2WD low range for the 3rd gen. Tacoma

@lapoltba Morning! Would you ever consider making a set for 2nd Gen? There are a bunch of people who are lined up to purchase a kit:

Unfortunately, they haven't been on in over a year, and the person actually making the modules hasn't been on in somewhat longer than that.

 

Grant83 hasn’t been on since March 2024.

 

Is there a version for gen4 sr5 ?

Shouldn't. They have much more low end torque and a 4.1:1 reverse.

 

Eh, it would think it would still be useful based on how that transmission is in the 3rd gen. They have more low end torque if boost kicks in…but I doubt anyone is getting boost in reverse. The reverse gear is still relatively tall, especially if you’re trying to back something up, especially uphill.

 

Nobody makes one yet. I don’t have a 4G but based on the t-case and ADD actuator, it would function pretty much identical to 3G. My problem is since I don’t own one I can’t do any testing, and the connectors I think are needed, I can’t find.

Still useful for slow winding offroading where you are turning a lot so don't want the binding of 4wd but want the control and torque of low range.

 

That is the what mine is used for 99.5% of the time I use 2low, steep winding descent where the low range is nice to keep speed down, but no binding of the front wheels when making tight turns. even then making a 3 point turn on a switch back is not rare for the trails we end up on

 

I guess I've been lucky with the heavy off-roading I do. Even when it does get tight There's enough wheel slip that I don't have binding in 4Lo

Of course I have the harness because a manual 3rd gen is just obnoxious in reverse

 

It's really not if you're into Dutch reverse racing...cuz if you're not dutch you're not much.

Yes, in a manual transmission, the 2 wheel has a much higher ratio than the 4Lo. So, particularly when pulling loads up steeps and even moreso when pulling loads via winding steep, and most particularly (which applies to me), when backing up winding steeps with loads... Two wheel low is basically necessary. I am smoking my clutch.

For some reason in my head I thought you were in a 4th gen.

 

I'm sure it has some use, but is it necessary? The 2.4 makes a good amount of boost and torque below 1500rpm. Plus, with the 4th gen transmission's lower gearing, you can reverse at parking lot speeds with the clutch fully released.

I've always just done multi-point turns in that situation. Going down a steep hill on full engine braking on just my rear wheels gives me some bad thoughts about overall vehicle stability.

Wish I bought one while they were available. I've definitely have occasional issues with stalling the truck in reverse on hills.
